What better occasion than on this Memorial Day 2015 to enjoy a performance Robin Williams delivered more than 30 years ago? The versatile actor and brilliant comedian who, tragically, took his own life in August of last year gave an appreciative audience his impression of what it would be like to be the American Flag.
What made the 1982 segment from a television special even more remarkable than the inspired display of Williams’ incomparable talent was the fact that the performance was created by Norman Lear and presented by People For the American Way. As you may know, Lear is a writer and TV producer known for his ardent support of progressive causes. People For the American Way is an ultra-liberal organization Lear founded in 1981 to counter so-called “right-wing” political activities.
But no matter who sponsored Robin Williams’ tribute to Old Glory — no matter how far left were the politics of those behind the comedian’s Stars ‘n’ Stripes act — the video is well worth watching. You can see it by clicking above.
