From what you see on a cell phone video posted apparently by an onlooker to a very tense confrontation on a New York City street over the weekend, a couple of NYPD officers were in a volatile and threatening situation that could have gone south — very far south — very quickly. The two officers — a white man and a white woman, from what the video shows — were surrounded by several black people protesting what appears to have been the detention of another black individual. Fortunately, the incident is said to have ended without gunfire, even though one of the officers is seen getting slugged in the face and the other appears to be struggling to protect her gun from being snatched from its holster.
As Twitchy notes, the video was originally published on Facebook by a user identified as Seth Torres-Campbell. Though that post has since been removed or blocked, the video is still available on YouTube. It appears to show just how close the confrontation came to escalating into a much worse situation.
Social media commenters noted that the incident can be seen as reflective of a growing disrespect for law enforcement and the willingness of some to challenge or defy the authority of officers performing their duties.
