Another heart-stopping incident involving an Amtrak passenger train has underscored the fact that a mere fraction of a second can mean the difference between life and death.
Video captured by a security camera in Jacksonville, Fla., shows the instant a southbound train heading from New York to Miami approached a crossing where a speeding car had swerved around the warning gate and tried to race across the tracks. The car didn’t make it, but miraculously the three people in the vehicle did.
First Coast News reports the car was literally torn in two by the impact: “The driver, 21-year-old Stacey Peterson Junior, and the front seat passenger 35-year-old Edward Peterson were released from the hospital a few hours later with minor scrapes and bruises. Edward’s girlfriend was sitting in the backseat where the car was sliced through by the train. She was ejected from the car and he found her in the grass across the road.”
