Yesterday, I reported that the 1st Battalion of the 79th Airborne Brigade was utterly destroyed by artillery fire along the Ukrainian/Russian border. Today, it was confirmed in a briefing at the Ukraine Crisis Media Center in Kiev, by U.S. Ambassador Geoffrey R. Pyatt, that Russia has been firing heavy artillery at Ukrainian troops from Russian territory. This possibly was the source of the overwhelming, accurate, artillery fire that completely destroyed the Ukrainian Battalion.
Ambassador Pyatt also stated that large amounts of Russian military equipment and armor continue to pour into rebel-controlled positions in the East. These convoys include advanced rocket launchers that will allow the separatists to stop the Ukrainian troop advance on Donetsk and other separatist-controlled areas.
These developments represent a significant escalation in the Ukrainian crisis with Russia, now directly at war with Ukraine. This is no longer a civil war within Ukraine itself. The only question now is when Putin will invade the former Soviet republic.
