A lot of people were scratching their heads when President Barack Obama received a Nobel Peace Prize for seeming to have done nothing to secure peace in the United States or otherwise. The prize was given to Obama during his first year of presidency for his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people.” Nobel Peace Prize officials later admitted they had jumped the gun and awarded the prize too early, with one ex-director of the Nobel panel saying Obama has “failed to live up to the panel’s expectations.”
Now, in an equally perplexing turn of events, it is being reported that Donald Trump has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. According to The Independent, Trump has been nominated for the prize because of his, “vigorous peace through strength ideology.” Specifically mentioned were Trump’s comments on how he would destroy ISIS, his supporting comments of Vladimir Putin, and his tough words on financial dealings with China.
According to Heather Saul of The Independent, there are other individuals being considered for the Nobel Peace Prize. Saul writes, “Kristian Berg Harpviken, a Nobel watcher and head of the Peace Research Institute in Oslo, told Reuters the NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden has also been tipped for an award, alongside Colombian peace negotiators, U.S. Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz and Ali Akbar Salehi, head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organisation.”
