After President Obama saluted Marines with a coffee cup in hand Tuesday, since dubbed the “latte salute,” there was a large outcry on various social media platforms, including from conservatives on Twitter.
CNN contributor Sally Kohn tweeted a photo of former President George W. Bush holding his dog, Barney, while saluting, noting it with a “giant AHEM.”

Most were not impressed with Kohn’s tweet, as documented in part by tweet aggregator Twitchy:

@sallykohn Of course you do. The difference being an effort to salute vs. a couldn’t-care-less moment.

@sallykohn As a vet I know saluting is sometimes awkward but at least Bush cleared his right hand. (Also, it was a dog, not Starbucks.)

John Hayward had this to offer ion Breitbart:
“It looks a bit goofy because he’s wrestling with a dog and he’s got the dog leash wrapped around his arm, but he’s clearly making a real effort to show proper respect.
“Barack Obama on the other hand, made no such effort… and this on the very day he’s sent American troops into harm’s way, in a None Dare Call It War action he says will last for years.”
“Procedures for Saluting” can be found on page 7 of this United States Marine Corps document.
