Sen. Bernie Sanders angered a crowd in a recent town hall event in Vermont, when he revealed his support for Israel.
A woman in the crowd had questioned a statement Sanders has made criticizing Hamas – not Israel. The crowd did not attempt to hide their displeasure when he referenced a letter he had written, conceding that Israel’s recent action in Gaza was “overreacted,” yet noting Hamas was in the wrong for launching so many rockets into Israel.
One man got particularly angry and began yelling at Sanders. (Take note the uproar at 3:15, and the man at 3:20.)
“Excuse me! Shut up,” Sanders responded. “You don’t have the microphone.”
The man was undeterred, raised his voice and stood up to make his point, pointing at Sanders in an accusing manner. When an officer started to move towards him, the man sat down, providing a chance for many others to yell their thoughts. It was not pretty.
“You are entitled to your view,” Sanders said in an effort to calm the room. “I am entitled to my view. In my view, Hamas has done those things, and on top of that, Hamas is very clear, their view is that Israel should not have a right to exist.”
One women absolutely lost it (4:36), defending Hamas as a “service organization”, shouting, “F**k Israel! F**k!”

“The point that I’m making is, yeah, I share your concerns about Israel’s overreaction,” Sanders concluded. “ But… I believe in a two state solution. I would hope that the United States… can finally work out a situation where Israel has the right to exist in security. [And] at the same time, the Palestinians have a state of their own, and that’s what I’d like to do.”
The crowd still had a few qualms on how this plan could possibly come about.
“I’m sorry, I don’t have the magic answer,” he admitted. “This is a very depressing and difficult issue. This has gone on for 60 bloody years. Year after year. War after war. If you’re asking me, do I have the magical solution, I don’t…. That is my answer.”
