Deep in the heart of Texas — albeit within the leftist bastion of San Antonio — city leaders have recently passed a law designed to reduce perceived discrimination against homosexuals. In protecting one group, however, some say that Christians will inevitably see their freedom of religious expression curtailed.
As previously reported, the bill will prohibit anyone who has expressed a bias against any aspect of the gay lifestyle from working for the city; and opponents say that language in the ordinance is far too nebulous.
Liberty Counsel President Mat Staver, one of many who worked to prevent this law from passing, says it will have far-reaching implications.
“People who want to make a living will not be able to work with the city of San Antonio either directly or indirectly if they have any alleged bias in their background regarding so-called LGBT issues,” he said, resulting in “a significant discrimination against people of faith.”
Furthermore, the law could force churches to abide by rules contrary to their own belief system, such as allowing restrooms to be used by either sex to placate transgender individuals.
An area megachurch pastor, Steve Branson said that city leaders are trying “to make a few people examples,” noting that the new ordinance “is going to be very punitive toward believers.”
Mayor Julian Castro represented the other side of the debate, declaring that the law “is about saying there are no second-class citizens in San Antonio.”
Ignoring the glaring irony in his statement, Castro and other proponents of this law are creating such a second-class populated by those with traditional morals who are no longer at liberty to publicly espouse their beliefs.
In the left’s comprehensive effort to redefine America as a post-Christian nation where any perverse desire is defended, those who hold fast to our founding principles are an obvious impediment. Laws like this serve to silence many of those voices as the dismantling of our culture continues in perpetuity.
The amoral left is counting on Christians remaining silent out of fear, which many undoubtedly will. Plenty more, however, will inevitably reach a breaking point and find it necessary to speak out as never before.
Branson concluded that his city “will react strongly” to the new law. A similar groundswell of discontent continues to build among the faithful throughout this great nation.
