Senator Rob Portman (R-OH) warned that Republicans will file lawsuits against President Obama if he moves forward on giving legal status to millions of undocumented immigrants without Congress.
“I think there will be lawsuits filed,” Portman said Wednesday on MSNBC’s Morning Joe.
Republicans may use a government spending bill that will withhold funding for this executive order, but will not shut down the government. Portman said lawmakers in Congress prefer to keep the government open through the fiscal year. He suggested the president be patient until January when the new Congress is sworn in so they can participate in this immigration reform.

“Congress hasn’t even been sworn in yet. Let’s wait until January 6th. And let’s be sure that Republicans also, you know, work with him on this.”
Portman said the president will make the existing situation in Washington worse if he does not cooperate with Republicans:
“Let’s try to work together, rather than making it almost impossible. He’ll poison the well if he does it.”
