As much as many would say that CNN is deserving of criticism for some of its news reporting and analysis that leans far to the left, the network also deserves kudos when it ignores the politically correct path to liberal approval and doggedly pursues the truth. Such is the case with at least a portion of the cable net’s coverage of the state’s case against the six Baltimore police officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray.
CNN reports that major discrepancies have been disclosed between the case presented by Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby and the separate investigation conducted by the police department. One of the big differences between the two probes concerns the knife that authorities say was found on Gray the day he was taken into custody.
Lawyers for two officers have challenged a key finding of State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby’s case: that a knife found on Freddie Gray was legal in Maryland and therefore the officers didn’t have a right to arrest Gray. The police investigation found that the knife is illegal under Baltimore city code.
In addition, according to the CNN report, sources inside the investigation have revealed that police never contemplated a homicide charge — the most serious charge filed by the state against the veteran officer who drove the transport van in which Freddie Gray allegedly suffered terrible injuries that eventually led to his death.
Officials familiar with the probes also say the homicide investigation run by police investigators at most contemplated a manslaughter charge, not second degree murder as Mosby charged one of the officers, Caesar Goodson. To win conviction for murder, prosecutors must prove intent to kill. Manslaughter relates to unintentional killings.
CNN also spoke with a former deputy state’s attorney in the Baltimore office now run by Marilyn Mosby. Page Croyder, who spent 21 years in the prosecutor’s office, has been scathing in her criticism of Mosby’s charges against the Baltimore Six, attacking the novice prosecutor’s hasty filings as reflective of “either incompetence or an unethical recklessness.”
