President Obama’s State of the Union address this year was not a big TV hit. An Associated Press report on aol.com says the 2015 SOTU attracted the second-lowest television audience in 15 years.
According to Nielsen data, 31.7 million viewers watched Tuesday night’s prime-time address on broadcast and cable networks.
That’s the lowest television viewership for a State of the Union address since President Bill Clinton’s final speech to a joint session of Congress in 2000.
Still, with close to 32 million people watching on TV — and another million or so reportedly streaming the speech online — that’s a lot of eyeballs, as they say in the business.
For anyone who knows the SOTU setting in the chamber of the U.S. House, seeing the vice president over Obama’s shoulder screen-left, and the speaker on the other side of the picture, is a familiar image.
And for most of the hour that the president addresses the joint session of congress, both men on his right and left are also on camera, being watched closely for their reactions — body language and facial expressions.

That’s why it’s especially interesting when John Boehner reveals to the news magazine 60 Minutes what he stared at while Obama was rattling off his supposed achievements as well as his wish list for continuing to fundamentally transform America.
As reported on The Blaze: “House Speaker John Boehner tells CBS’ ’60 Minutes’ that during President Barack Obama’s State of the Union speech he focused on the back of the president’s head, trying not to make news.”

The Daily Mail reports that Boehner’s admission follows a similar disclosure from Vice President Joe Biden in an appearance on the Ellen DeGeneres show. Whether he was just telling the simple, honest truth or trying to be funny for the show host and her audience, Biden let it be known that Obama’s speech bored him and that he had to pretend to be engaged:
He told DeGeneres: “You know I sit back there and I listen and I help write the ideas in the speech and I know it all… I got to pay attention.
“And she [Jill Biden] said, welcome to the club. And I said what do you mean? She said, welcome to the Good Wife’s Club.
“She said, how many times have I sat and listened to you make a speech and pretended to be interested?”
