Democrats are upset, saying that President Obama broke a solemn promise. Republicans are upset, arguing that Obama is playing politics with a serious issue of national importance. Those who generally support as well as those who usually oppose the president are hopping mad that Obama is punting on his pledge to take decisive, executive action on immigration — amnesty.
Of course, it could be that many Senate Democrats running for re-election in red states are faking their outrage, quietly thankful that Obama isn’t fortifying their political opposition by issuing provocative amnesty directives before the mid-term elections.
It could also be that some in the GOP are concerned that the president’s new plan to wait till after the mid-terms to act on amnesty could open the door to bold executive action on a larger scale. After all, neither Obama nor his liberal allies on Capitol Hill would have to face the voters again for another two years.
