It happened in the nation’s capital, at a publicly funded middle school, where a sixth-grade teacher required her students to compare George W. Bush to Adolf Hitler, claiming they both “abused their power.”
We get details from the Daily Caller:
A sixth-grade teacher at a Washington, D.C. public school will apologize to students but otherwise is receiving no punishment whatsoever for sending students home with an assignment this week instructing them to use a Venn diagram to compare former President George W. Bush and Adolf Hitler.
According to the Washington Times, which obtained a copy of the assignment given to sixth-graders at McKinley Tech Middle School, the teacher handed out the homework with these instructions:
“Now that we have read about two men of power who abused their power in various ways, we will compare and contrast them and their actions. Please refer to your texts, ‘Fighting Hitler — A Holocaust Story’ and ‘Iraq War Justified Despite No WMD’ to compare and contrast former President George W. Bush and Hitler. We will use this in class tomorrow for an activity!” reads the text at the top of the assignment.
When an upset parent complained to the school — reportedly a parent who disagreed with Bush policies but thought the assignment way out of bounds — this was the response:
A spokeswoman for D.C. Public Schools said the two readings were among suggested curriculum the school system had previously approved but that the texts were not meant to be compared in the manner assigned by the teacher.
“The teacher deeply regrets this mistake, and any suggestion to malign the presidency or make any comparison in this egregious way,” spokeswoman Melissa Salmanowitz said.
The Daily Caller article adds:
The parent also noted that the claim that Bush and Hitler “abused their power in various ways” provides the teacher’s opinion as fact to impressionable sixth graders.
There’s no indication from the D.C. school system that the teacher — who has not been identified — will face any sort of disciplinary action for asking her students to compare a President of the United States with history’s most notorious Nazi war criminal.
