The relationship between Russian President Putin and German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been a situation worth watching for some time now. Merkel was raised behind the Iron Curtain in East Germany and is fluent in Russian. Putin is fluent in German. Obviously, there is a special relationship there. I believe it has been President Putin’s goal all along to use this crisis to further the dissolution of NATO from the inside out by applying pressure on the European economies via the threat of the loss of Russian trade and the impact that would have on their debt-laden budgets and corporate health. Well, yesterday, Putin and Merkel had a phone call and afterwards Merkel stated to the world, “America can no longer solve all of the world’s problems.” I would have loved to be a fly on the wall during that conversation.
Germany is our most important ally in Europe and a fiscally responsible economic powerhouse. What is shocking is the complete lack of engagement on this issue on the part of the Obama administration. What if Germany decides to move to the Russian camp? The President has completely abdicated American leadership. He just doesn’t care. He’s playing golf. His attitude is, I’m leaving in two years. I’ve got mine, get yours. There is no adult leadership in the room. We’ve got foreign policy by sorority girl hashtag. It’s ridiculous and embarrassing. It would be funny if the stakes weren’t so high. We are talking about peace in Europe where there have been two devastating world wars in the last hundred years. There are Americans still alive who fought during WWII. Did you remember that war ended with the employment of nuclear weapons?
The North Atlantic Treaty Organization has kept the peace and contained Soviet aggression for decades. Obama is allowing it to be slowly destroyed. Show some leadership on the Ukrainian issue Mr. President. The world is waiting, watching and acting while you golf.
