Another day, another rejection for the much-maligned National School Lunch Program championed by First Lady Michelle Obama. But this “adios” to the “healthier” lunch menu cuts especially deep, because the nanny-state program has been dumped by the second-largest school district in Barack Obama’s home state of Illinois.
CBS Chicago reports that Township High School District 214 decided to drop out of the federal program, after deciding its guidelines were too restrictive. And the district’s decision was not without financial penalty, because dumping the First Lady’s highly restrictive lunch menu meant forfeiting nearly $1 million in federal funding.
Still, say district officials, the loss of federal funds was worth it — to give students greater flexibility in what they can eat,
For instance, kids would not have been able to buy hard-boiled eggs or certain types of yogurt. School officials also have noted new guidelines consider hummus to be too high in fat, and pretzels to be too high in salt; non-fat milk containers larger than 12 ounces could not be sold either.

Numerous school districts around the country have opted out of the Michelle-backed lunch program after reporting that students turned up their noses and tons of uneaten “healthier” food had to be thrown out. Two districts in New York state just announced they were opting for menu freedom, even though that meant a loss of federal funding.
