After an initial report suggested Republican National Committee (RNC) chairman Reince Priebus “spent nearly an hour Wednesday” speaking with GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump asking him to tone down his rhetoric, the real estate mogul gave his side of the story.
The Washington Post first reported on the call between Priebus and Trump Wednesday. While he acknowledged his rhetoric was brought up during the conversation, Trump said the call had a “congratulatory tone,” and only lasted a little over ten minutes. Trump gave this initial reaction on Twitter Thursday:
Totally false reporting on my call with @Reince Priebus. He called me, ten minutes, said I hit a “nerve”, doing well, end!

“He did say, ‘you know, you could keep it down a little bit, but you can’t change your personality and I understand that.’ It was really a nice call, a congratulatory call,” Trump said to CNN, which offers more insight on the call:
A Republican source familiar with the call told CNN on Wednesday that Priebus expressed his concern to Trump during the call and that they discussed a range of topics.
‘Look, I’ve gotta tell you, I spent four years trying to make inroads with the Hispanic community … how we address illegal immigration is very important,’ to winning back Hispanics politically, Priebus said at the end of the call, according to the GOP source.
Trump first told CNN he may have brought up the issue of immigration himself, mentioning the San Francisco shooting at the hands of an illegal immigrant. The bombastic businessman also insisted he would ‘win the Hispanic vote’ because he will create the most jobs of any presidential candidate.
Trump topped a Public Policy Polling (PPP) poll of Republican presidential candidates in North Carolina with 16 percent this week, and came second in a nationwide CNN/ORC poll taken between June 26-28 with 12 percent–second only to former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush.
