Sen. Joni Ernst, R-Iowa, delivered the official Republican response to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union Tuesday, attacking “failed policies like Obamacare” and indirectly responding to Obama’s attack on Keystone XL in his address.

The newly sworn-in Senator – a Lieutenant Colonel in the Iowa Army National Guard – gave the address from the Senate Armed Forces Committee Room Tuesday, a committee she will serve on this term. “Americans have been hurting; but when we demanded solutions, too often Washington responded with the same stale mindset that led to failed policies like Obamacare. It’s a mindset that gave us political talking points, not serious solutions,” Ernst asserted in her response.
That’s why the new Republican majority you elected started by reforming Congress to make it function again. And now, we’re working hard to pass the kind of serious job-creation ideas you deserve.
The Iowa Republican also responded to Obama’s Keystone XL dig.
Obama said in the State of the Obama Tuesday: “21st century businesses need 21st century infrastructure — modern ports, stronger bridges, faster trains, and the fastest internet. Democrats and Republicans used to agree on this. So let’s set our sights higher than a single oil pipeline.” To which Ernst replied:
President Obama has been delaying this bipartisan infrastructure project for years, even though many members of his party, unions, and a strong majority of Americans support it. The President’s own State Department has said Keystone’s construction could support thousands of jobs and pump billions into our economy, and do it with minimal environmental impact.
“We worked with Democrats to pass this bill through the House. We’re doing the same now in the Senate.” she added. “President Obama will soon have a decision to make: will he sign the bill, or block good American jobs?”
While she did not appear to have an on-camera flub like the one Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., made last year, the first female combat veteran ever to serve in the upper chamber drew plenty of attention for the shoes she wore for the occasion:
