After photojournalist James Foley's brutal execution at the hands of the Islamic State, his parents spoke about his death today at a press conference in New Hampshire.
Foley's father, John, said:
The way he died was horrific. It testifies to his courage. We believe he was a martyr, a martyr for freedom.
James Foley, who had gone missing in Syria in 2012, was beheaded by the Islamic State in retribution for the US airstrikes ordered by President Obama.
His mother, Diane, said:
We're very proud of him. He was a courageous, fearless journalist, very compassionate American. I mean, the best of America.
Speaking of the Islamic State, Diane stated:
Jim was just innocent, and they knew it. They knew that Jim was just a symbol for our country.
Obama spoke earlier today at a press conference about the brutal death. He said he was "heartbroken" about Foley's death but insisted that US operations against the Islamic State would continue. "From governments and peoples across the Middle East, there has to be a common effort to extract this cancer so it does not spread," he said. "A group like ISIL has no place in the 21st century."
