Kurdish soldiers delivered food and water by helicopter to Mount Shingal, where thousands of Yezidi civilians have been stranded. The helicopter’s gunner responded with heavy fire against ISIS ground troops who tried to shoot the aircraft down. Thousands of Yezidi Kurd have been trapped on this mountain ridge by ISIS militants.
Yazidis’ religions draws from Christianity, Judaism, and Zoroastrianism and is considered pre-Islamic. As one of the oldest religious communities in the world, they have long suffered persecution and possible genocide from ISIS terrorists.
The helicopter had only one suitable landing area on the mountain to drop off supplies provided by the Rwanga Charity Organization, run by Idris Nechirvan Barzani. People swarmed the aircraft and attempted to get on board. Only 20 refugees were able to squeeze on board the helicopter to escape two deaths: death from hunger, and death from ISIS fighters.
