Tallahassee police have placed an officer on paid administrative leave after he fired his taser into the back of unarmed Viola Young, 61, causing her to fall to the ground. Police Chief Michael DeLeo announced that officer Terry Mahan will be on leave pending the outcome of the investigation based on the citizen cell-phone video. DeLeo said,
“We will conduct a thorough investigation into this incident. We want to be transparent with the community by sharing what we can at this point.”
Police officers were patrolling the area as part of the department’s “Community Oriented Policing and Problem Solving Squad” in response to complaints about open-air drug sales in the neighborhood resulting in three individuals being arrested.

Viola Young approached officers and started yelling at them as they commanded a crowd to stay back from the area. Mahan told her to stay back. “I just want to know what is going on,” she shouted at officers. When Young attempted to walk away from Officer Mahan, he fired a Taser into her back, causing her to fall to the ground.
Mahan wrote in a probable-cause affidavit that “Viola Young caused me to take my focus off of one of the arrestees and engage her. Young’s actions obstructed officers while in the course of completing their legal duties.”
