Nearly two months after robbery suspect Michael Brown was shot and killed by a police officer in Ferguson, Mo., protesters continue to flood the streets of the St. Louis suburb, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.
Looting and sporadic violence followed the Aug. 9 incident as some sources suggested the black man was attempting to surrender when white officer Darren Wilson shot him. Subsequent evidence, however, including reports of significant facial injuries sustained by Wilson and Brown’s autopsy results, cast doubt on that scenario.
Nevertheless, prominent civil rights leaders joined the cause; and U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder promised a federal investigation into the shooting. Barack Obama even capitalized on the controversy during a recent United Nations speech, using Brown’s death as ostensible evidence that the U.S. suffers from “racial and ethnic tensions.”

Police were eventually able to disperse the crowd, arresting three participants. Aside from a popping sound later that night, which authorities indicate was caused by a vehicle driving over a bottle, the protest eventually died down.

There is no indication as of this writing what caused the fire that consumed the memorial. By the end of the day, a new shrine had been erected in its place.
