A new House bill has been introduced that would dramatically change the rules for gun ownership in America.
Democrats have introduced HR 4269, a bill designed “to regulate assault weapons, to ensure that the right to keep and bear arms is not unlimited, and for other purposes,” according to BearingArms.com.
As BearingArms editor Bob Owens put it:
“They would like to outlaw the vast majority of the best-selling rifles, shotguns, and handguns in the United States, any device or part that could ‘accelerate the rate of fire of a semiautomatic rifle,’ (which could mean literally anything depending on ATF interpretation), parts kits that enable citizens to build common firearms, and standard capacity magazines.”
U.S. Rep. Sam Farr, D-Cal., an original co-sponsor of the measure, unsurprisingly has a much different take on the bill:
“Military-style weapons designed to kill as many people as quickly as possible have no place in our communities. Since the last assault weapons ban expired, we have watched a steady stream of news reports about one town after another torn apart by gun violence. At the center of almost everyone of these mass shootings was an assault weapon that should not have been allowed in the hands of a killer.”
According to Farr’s website, the bill prohibits the
“sale, transfer, production, and importation of:
-Semi-automatic rifles and handguns with a military-style that can accept a detachable magazine;
-Semi-automatic rifles and handguns with a fixed magazine that can hold more than 10 rounds;
-Semi-automatic shotguns with a military-style feature;
-Any ammunition feeding device that can hold more than 10 rounds;
-And 157 specifically-named and listed firearms.”
