After a failed attempt to oust Barack Obama in 2012, Donald Trump recently told Fox News Channel host Sean Hannity that he doesn’t believe Mitt Romney deserves another chance to run as the Republican presidential candidate in 2016.
When asked if he had an early favorite, Trump made it clear that the former Massachusetts governor is one name he does not want to see on the ballot.
“I’ve been hearing about Mitt Romney,” he said, “and the problem is he blew it. Whether you like him or don’t like him – I like him – but he blew it.”

Even well into the 2012 election cycle, the outspoken magnate explained Romney was in an enviable position against his incumbent rival.
“He had that election won,” Trump said. “Four weeks to that election, Obama was doing horribly, and he blew it.”
Bad performances in latter debates played a role in Romney’s ultimate defeat, Trump reasoned, and provided a legitimate reason that he should not receive his party’s support in 2016.

“The second debate was bad,” he told Hannity. “The third debate was atrocious. The first debate was great. I don’t know what happened to him.”
For some reason, Trump lamented, Romney was unable to translate his momentum into a win at the polls two years ago.
“The bottom line: he had it won,” he said. “It’s like somebody in golf. You have guys that can never sink the three-footer to win the match.”
It is because of his 2012 performance, Trump concluded, that someone other than Romney should take the GOP lead in the race to replace Obama.
“I don’t think he should run because he choked or whatever you want to say,” he said. “But he blew it; and that was an election that was easier to win than running against Hillary.”
