The presumptive Republican presidential nominee has been highly critical of the importation of steel from other countries, presumably why the unusual backdrop was chosen. The point appears to have been lost amid mockery of the chosen backdrop.
Social media hecklers zoomed in on the heaps of trash and began their own onslaught of critical comments. One Twitter user mocked the staffers for allowing him to stand in front of a “giant pile of garbage.”

Conservative blogger Erick Erickson imitated Trump’s tone tweeting, “Trump stands in front of garbage to give a garbage speech. Sad!”

Another posted an image of Sesame Street’s Oscar the Grouch side by side with Trump’s rally photo of the billionaire standing in front of the recyclables.
