It happened at a shopping area called Bridgewater Plaza — the unthinkable, a shocking event caught on camera during a live, early morning news report. Video from the scene shows a news crew from Roanoke, Va., TV station WDBJ being attacked by a shooter who fired what sounds to have been seven or eight shots in quick succession from close range.
Police are reporting there are three victims of the horrific violence — two of them, said to be the TV news reporter and her videographer, have apparently died. Authorities say the shooter, as of this writing, is still on the loose.
A CNN report identifies the two employees of the TV station as reporter Alison Parker and videographer Adam Ward. Both were in their twenties.

A personal note — I have been in the media business for some 40 years, 15 of those years spent as a TV anchor and reporter for various stations across the country, including a TV news operation in Virginia. I have never seen anything like this. It is a stark, sobering, heartbreaking reminder that one’s life can suddenly change, without warning, in an instant.
