One doesn’t have to be all that superstitious to wonder if a terribly unfortunate, freak accident that happened to Harry Reid on New Year’s Day could be a sign of trouble ahead for congressional Democrats in 2015.
Via USA Today, we learn that the Senate Democratic leader is in a Las Vegas hospital recovering from broken bones he suffered in a bizarre exercising mishap at the aging lawmaker’s Nevada home.
A statement from Reid’s office said that, though the senator’s injuries are rather extensive, doctors expect a full recovery:
“A piece of equipment Senator Reid was using to exercise broke, causing him to fall and break a number of ribs and bones in his face,” according to the statement.
“Senator Reid will return to Washington this weekend and be in the office Tuesday as the Senate prepares to reconvene.”
Reportedly, the accident occurred when an elastic exercise band broke and hit the 75-year-old Reid in the face, causing him to fall.

As he fell, Reid, who is a former amateur boxer, struck part of the equipment and broke several bones near his right eye. He then broke several ribs as he hit the floor.
As noted by USA Today:
Reid has had several mishaps and hospital stays in recent years. He dislocated his shoulder while jogging in Washington in 2011, leaving him with a bump on the head and a black eye.
In 2012, the Democratic leader was involved in a multiple-car accident in Las Vegas, suffering rib and hip contusions. Reid had a brief stay in a Washington hospital in 2013 after experiencing exhaustion.
