In a video just posted online, Muslim jihadists linked to the Islamic State are seen apparently beheading a Frenchman abducted in Algeria. Extremists associated with ISIS have reportedly carried out their threat to kill their hostage unless France stopped its air strikes in Iraq and Syria.
The latest victim of brutality by ISIS is said to be Herve Gourdel, a 55-year-old hiker from the southern French city of Nice — not a soldier, not a journalist, not an aid worker, but a recreational hiker.
According to ABC News:
In the video, a man who appears to be 55-year-old Nice native Herve Gourdel is seen kneeling in front of several armed militants as a statement is read by one of them in Arabic. Near the end of the nearly 5-minute video, Gourdel is pushed over and held down, at which point the video cuts out. When it returns, he appears to have been killed.
Before Gourdel’s death, the militant says they will be “closer to Allah by killing this filthy Frenchman in defense of Allah’s religion” and then addresses ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, saying, “we are with you… here are your soldiers fighting those you fight and making peace with those you make peace with.”
Previous ISIS beheading videos have shown the bloody executions of two American journalists, James Foley and Steven Sotloff, as well as a British aid worker, David Haines.
