A tornado that ripped through the small city of Van, Texas, Sunday hit 515 structures, destroyed 90 homes, and tragically took the lives of two well-loved citizens – David and Brenda Tapley.
David was a retired police officer who had served 31 years in law enforcement. Brenda had worked as the secretary at Van United Methodist Church. Both were active in the church, and are remembered as “pillars in the community” by Mike Johnston, who leads the congregation’s choir.
Though both will be greatly missed, their friends and family are finding comfort in a discovery that was made in the aftermath of the tornado.

The Tapley’s family Bible was found opened to a passage from James.
The passage, James 1:2-6, reads:
My brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of any kind, consider it nothing but joy, because you know that the testing of your faith produces endurance; and let endurance have its full effect, so that you may be mature and complete, lacking in nothing.
Though the situation is tragic – definitely a trial – and the couple will be sorely missed, their loved ones will find comfort knowing that the Tapleys are in a better place.
