Now more than ever before, the people are responsible for the character of their Congress. If that body be ignorant, reckless and corrupt, it is because the people tolerate ignorance, recklessness and corruption. If it be intelligent, brave and pure, it is because the people demand these high qualities to represent them in the national legislature…If the next centennial does not find us a great nation…it will be because those who represent the enterprise, the culture, and the morality of the nation do not aid in controlling the political forces. — James Garfield, the twentieth president of the United States, 1877.
I believe the problems that awakened the “Silent Majority” of the early 1970s, and today’s T.E.A. Party were actually caused by those groups. I believe the past abominable voting percentages in this country, in both times, represent the apathy and ignorance, the pure selfishness of these groups, who, for some reason, are celebrated as heroes, when they finally stand and do their civic duty clean up the mess their negligence caused.
A Gallup poll, shows: that progressive liberals, (enemies of freedom and American capitalism), represent less than 25 percent of the voting population that conservatives represent 40 percent that moderates represent 35 percent.
Yet, because of the failure of the everyday citizen to vote, to simply pay attention to what is going on, their failure to inform themselves until their own ox was gored, we get a liberal majority in Congress and local elections.
These people didn’t care while the situation only affected others, or stole others money or property. They didn’t bother to vote just out of a patriotic duty to install the “best and “brightest.” They let others have their way, and look where we landed.
While I support their new-found actions and attention, I loathe their past apathy. If they stay awake and keep voting, in all elections great and small, keeping their representatives aware that they are watching them, I might muster up some respect for these newly-awakened citizens. Maybe. It will take a number of election cycles to tell.
Just as the “Silent Majority” awakened to take the country back from the hippies and scum of their day, keeping thug union-owned tax and spender George McGovern, from the presidency he seemed destined for, the T.E.A. Party has already started it’s efforts to fix the problems they caused, heavily influencing the outcome of the 2010 elections, and are hopefully ready to step up in this most important 2012 election cycle.
What we really need to discover is some way to keep Americans from going back to sleep, and once again ceding the country to the lowest form of power-hungry thieves.
It is worth repeating, “the people of America are responsible for the character of their government.”
James Garfield was right, and not just for his time, but for all time.
