As the left falls all over itself to claim that building the Ground Zero Mega-Mosque is the perfect chance to “showcase” our “Constitutional freedoms” and our religious tolerance, there is another state where religious tolerance is not as noticeably on display as it is for New York’s Muslims. Naturally, in Vermont, it is the religious freedom of Christians being denied. To be sure, the Old Media is not nearly as interested in this story.
Richard and Joan Downing own a hilltop property in Lyndonville, Vermont and on that property they’ve built a family chapel where they host weekly Catholic services for all. Next to the chapel they have also erected a 24-foot-tall cross called the Cross of Dozulé, a cross that the State of Vermont is insisting that they remove. How does the State of Vermont justify its demands that the family pull down the cross? Vermont officials are citing environmental regulations that give it the power to determine what sort of construction violates the “aesthetics” of Vermont’s scenery.
Now in their seventies, the Downings built their Catholic chapel in 2005 to serve their large extended family. The Downings’ chapel is used by their seven children, three of them adopted, and the 35 foster children they helped raise over the years. The chapel is also open to the general public.

So, so true. We were attacked on 9/11/01. We didn't attack back the way we should have. In 2008, we started feeling the sympathies of those in power side with Islam. Not only does he do that, but he speaks ill of America and Israel, and has a goal of destroying Christianity, and her Holy Roots. it seems like the issue is more about it being lighted at night and being an eyesore to such a large area because people want to enjoy nature not some lighted cross dorking up the environment. this is one of those issues where it helps to take an opposing view and think about the ramifications using Jesus' do-to-others logic. what happens if we put up a huge 24' satanic sign and lighted it off at night? i'm thinking people would not go for it. there's a point where you let the Spirit of God speak or where you just slap people around with the cross. i'm thinking people would appreciate more the helpfulness of those at that church in the community and there would be less to no need for a 24' foot cross. if it was in the city with all of the lights and what not then it blends in. but out in the country i can understand why a lighted "anything" at night of such size would be an eyesore and that does not mean people hate Jesus because the "anything" just happens to be the cross. sometimes christians need to take the higher ground and stop acting like they are losing were they for instance in this case not light the cross up at night. i love Jesus and I don't need to light a 24' cross for everyone to see. i need to serve others like Jesus did and let that speak to the nations. turn off the cross at night and let the people have the view that God created is my recommendation in this matter with the information i currently am aware of regarding this situation. =)
I would agree with RobertK in what he had to say. I also Love Jesus and i don't need a 24' Cross to
express my feelings. At some point in time we need to listen to our community and try and work with them. I do think that the State of Vermont is over reacting to this perceived problem. Let the local people work with each other to come to some solution. Not knowing what the area looks like in daylight or at dark, it is hard to come to much of conclusion.
Which one of us is missing the point? I thought the point was this: If a mosque comes even close to America's "Sacred Ground", then why should one want to take a Christian symbol from private property that has already been erected, and the town people had already come to agreements on? I suspect the agreements where for the light they (the owners) lit on their cross.

What someone does regarding their religon and free speach on their own property, as long as it's not actually harming somebody, should be none of the States business. Um, does anything in Vermont make national news–as compared to Manhattan, which has 1.6 million people just in that borough? The entire state of Vermont has about 600,000, while Lyndonville has fewer than 1,200. Put another way,probably everybody in town could fit in the mosque.

Actually the church's own website has links to stories from at least three media sources, which seems about right for a local conflict in a little town in a tiny state. I'm sure Fox will be all over it now, though.

If there is a "decent" attorney, in their area, I hope said attorney will take their case, pro bono (to the Supreme Court if necessary). Obviously, the Downings were concerned enough, with their neighbors' complaints, to change the lighting; that should be all that's necessary. It's always been my personal opinion, that what you do on your own property is no one else's business, as long as its not a "junk yard", or a "sanitation problem" and a cross is neither of those! If the Downings have atheists, or non-Christian neighbors, who object, then advise said objectors " not to look"!
