Congresswoman Michele Bachmann, a Tea Party favorite who won the Ames straw poll, said “I agree” after a supporter told her President Obama should be impeached. The exchange took place at a Tuesday evening campaign event at a coffee shop in Newton, Iowa.
Supporter: Why don’t we impeach him and get him out of the way? He should be.
Bachmann: Well, I’ll tell you, I’ll tell you. I agree, I agree. Some people are really upset.
Supporter: We need people with some gonads.
Campaign spokeswoman Alice Stewart immediately responded, “She was not saying that she agrees that Obama should be impeached. She agreed with the man on what they were talking about before, that people are frustrated.”
Ed Morrissey of HotAir.com does not see this as an agreement, just a glib conversation on the campaign trail.
To date, no one in the media has reported the man’s original question, which would shed light on the context of this momentary interaction. (Provide context? Our media?)
The Minnesota congresswoman had previously raised the possibility of holding Obama in check with the powers of impeachment, if necessary. Last July, Bachmann said impeachment would follow “within seconds” if Obama unilaterally raised the debt ceiling.
Her supporters, likewise, favor the president’s removal from office. A month earlier, she noted:
The only thing is people wish Barack Obama was up for re-election right now, because they’d honestly love to have a chance to throw him out of office. Everywhere I go, people ask me, “Michele, can we impeach the president?” They want a referendum on him.
Nor is she the only Republican hearing such calls. The man’s statement that we need to get Obama “out of the way” echoes sentiments expressed in August at a town hall meeting with Texas Congressman Michael Burgess. The congressman agreed with a constituent who said impeachment “needs to happen” because “it would tie things up.”
Despite media backlash, Obama has richly earned an impeachment trial according to the criteria established by our Founding Fathers.
The missing piece of the puzzle has been finding a politician with the requisite fortitude to introduce articles of impeachment. But then, Rush Limbaugh has said, “The gonads on our team happen to be wearing skirts.”
