Whatever happens on November 6, one thing is (almost) certain.
The Daytona 500, also known as the Great American Race, will be held next February.
Now before you run, howling, to your keyboards to tell me how dare I trivialize the most important election in our times, let me continue a few paragraphs with what I have to say.
Every election cycle, about this time, someone tells me that the end of the Republic is nigh if so and so wins, and I have to sit them down and tell them that the American political system has something in common with the Daytona International Speedway—self-cleaning banks.
For those of you who are not even casual NASCAR fans, Daytona—and, by the way, big Bill France DID build that—is banked so sharply that when there is a wreck, the cars tend to slide down into the infield; hence the term “self-cleaning banks.”
America declared its independence on July 4, 1776. We were the product of a revolution fomented by 56 angry white guys, one of whom signed his name so big that the British King could see it without his glasses. We have never been a perfect nation, and we struggled for a fairly long time after the revolution to find a formula that worked for the long haul.
Our founding fathers found that formula in a form of gridlock.
Much of the genius in the Constitution is that our founding fathers came up with a three-pronged solution that does not allow anybody to drive the nation too far, too quickly.
That formula has allowed an otherwise imperfect nation, filled with the likes of, well, us, and our ancestors, to survive as the longest-lived experiment in self-government in history for 236 years.
In short, our political system has developed self-cleaning banks.
Push us too far in one direction, get us into a wreck, and the system itself has the capacity to right itself.
It’s not a perfect system. An incompetent socialist can get himself elected President. People who probably shouldn’t be able to can have an inordinate sway over public policy. But, at the end of the day, the average voter can march to the polls and set things back on the right path. And if you don’t think each and every vote counts, it was probably a bunch of NASCAR fans in Volusia County, Florida, home of the Daytona Speedway, who cast the deciding votes for George W. Bush in 2000.
Abraham Lincoln put it best when he said, “You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you can not fool all of the people all of the time.”
That was true in the mid 1860s when he said it, and it is even truer today in a world held together by instant communication.
So, if you’re still with me, what I am trying to say is that if Barack Obama were to win re-election, the Republic will survive. The Daytona 500 will run next February, after the Super Bowl is decided.
Congress will convene; the Supreme Court will hear and decide cases, many against the wishes of the Obama Administration.
Like Daytona, our system won’t stop the big wreck from happening; but it will protect us against the larger effects.
Presidents—whoever they are—are temporary.
So are Congressmen and Senators.
Now this should not by any means be construed as any kind of a suggestion that Mitt Romney is not going to win or that Barack Obama should win.
I’m only trying to put this election in perspective.
It is one that we have every four years. Every four years, some self-important oaf in the media will tell you that this is the most important election in our times. The truth is it is the most important election being held that day.
This nation has survived a lot worse than Barack Obama, including a whole bunch of people who can tell us about black helicopters and not much about American history.
If you want to get rid of Obama as I do, vote. It is the most affirmative action you can take. As long as you vote—win or lose—the Republic will survive.
If you don’t vote, you forfeit your right to complain.

Fred, I have to disagree with your assessment. After being a registered voter, democrat no less, for nearly 40 years–I see Americans at a precipice of federal control that we’ve never seen before. The current president is a muslim collaborator–he’s participated in supporting the overthrow of govts in mid-east and usurpation of power by radical muslim groups such as Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaeda to create a muslim “caliphate” or world govt. movement for control under Sharia law. OWEbama’s agenda has been to bring DOWN America’s capitalist system under HUGE WELFARE explosion–he has nearly succeeded in just 4 years–the country saved ONLY by GOP taking over the House control in ’10. One in 6 Americans are in POVERTY, FOODSTAMPS rolls have increased by 15 MILLION people and WELFARE expansion is at HIGHEST LEVEL SINCE 60′s. And as Americans listen to his LIES, he’s worked behind the scenes and with help of mainstream media to STRIP Americans of their rights with a National Defense Authorization Act that’s so vague it allows opportunity for OWEbama to seize and hold Americans INDEFINITELY IN DETENTION–opposition by ACLU, Huffington Post, Mother Jones and numerous other leftwing groups tell you that there’s definitely something despicable about this Act. He signed Executive order 13528 establishing a Council of Governors to SYNCHRONIZE and INTEGRATE civilian/state law enforcement with MILITARY activities in violation of the Posse Comitatus Act which prohibits military from ANY actions against American citizens except under specific limited emergency actions or authority passed by Congressional legislation. He signed Executive order for National Defense Resources Preparedness Act giving himself and his cabinet COMPLETE CONTROL over America’s natural resources, FOOD, PRIVATE INDUSTRY and THUMBS HIS NOSE AT CONSTITUTIONAL LIMITS ON GOVERNMENT. Under this administration Christian groups and citizens are under siege, the right to free speech is at risk and even the freedom to hold peaceful, honest, national elections are being threatened. We DO have MANY problems besides a socialist president. God has been squeezed out of our public lives and many of our homes. Bad taste and immorality are running rampant on the heels of that phenomenon. Our citizens are becoming complacent, apathetic and more interested in themselves than the perpetuation of the founding principles of our nation.
In a way, I understand what you mean, Fred. Now, I think that if Obama won (BITE MY TONGUE) again it would be an end of our God-given freedoms/liberties. But, it might bring about another revolution against the tyrannical government like in 1776 when our forefathers revolted against England’s oppression. I don’t think it’s something to despair over. We must keep our faith in God. No matter what happens, God will always help and save His people. And I don’t think it will last forever like some say. That is why the country needs to be broken up. It is simple too big and diverse for the many differing peoples to live peacefully together. Not only that, such a large country under a Federal System as we now have (The uS is NOT Republic except on paper.), such a political entity always tends to use hegemony in controlling other peoples and countries, exerting their influence and might in such a way as to become Imperialistic or you can say Empire.
The military is far too large to be trusted with a Federal Government and the Founding Fathers made this clear in their writings. This is another reason why the USA used to have State Guard units which could, if determined by the states and congress, be used in conjunction with the Federal Army. Have a small Federal military and many state militaries, each state having its’ own military, in order they supplement the Federal Army in REAL emergencies. NOT pretend emergencies as we’ve had the last 100 years.
The whole entity of the Federal Government becomes asinine when it uses its’ power at the expense of the states in order to control the entire population of the whole country. If you think about it, people in Alaska and Hawaii live under different cultures and customs than do people in the North and South. The same can be applied concerning the Southern and Northern US. In reality the culture and heritage of these two regions is quiet different and in opposition to each other if you study them closely. Personally I feel I have very little in common with people who live in the North. It’s worse than liberal verses conservative. Also this would be true concerning Alaska, however I can at least allow them have the authority to govern themselves and choose what they think best for themselves, whereas the Northerners has this attitude they must control everything, everyone everywhere. I can’t live acceptably with that.
Accordingly the country would be better off divided up, letting people, at first, choose to move to the region of their choice that most appropriately agrees with their culture, heritage and beliefs. Think about how nice this would be, to live apart from the liberals after all these years! To actually follow the US Constitution again properly, where laws, the Rule of Law actually meant something again! To not worry over who we are gonna attack next or who is gonna terrorize you! No more illegal immigrants, and the ones that do come are actually dealt with! No more free government money give-aways, taking your money instead! Where you can actually get a decent public education again for a change! And there is more…. So yeah, it is best that the country is broken apart if we could have anything remotely resembling what I described above.

NO, we don’t need to break up anything concerning the nation and it’s Constitution and principles. What we need is PARENTS controlling teacher’s unions to STOP INDOCTRINATION of school children and Federal laws requiring Collegiate institutions teach fair representation OF ALL ISSUES and studies instead of DICTATION BY MARXIST PROFESSORS to mush minded students not able to challenge those views without punitive grades or measures from their teachers. Time to STOP creating laws specifically targeted FOR certain groups–the Constitution and principles, the laws of the nation were supposed to be applied by a blind Lady Justice based on laws that are equally enforced regardless of race, color, religion, etc.. The failure in this system is HUMAN FAILURE, not the system the Founding Fathers had structured as foundation of the Republic. Making specific laws designed to protect specific people for whatever reason violates the spirit of the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution–Lady Justice sees NO color, race, or religion. DemocRATS have used subdivision of the electorate into various groups and entities to play one group against the other and control the people. I would be more likely to think that he is a hair away from declaring that NASCAR is environmentally unfriendly due to the high octane, fuel burning, omission spewing machines and ban it or mandate that his chevy volts be only machines used for racing events.
I don’t know Fred, if Obama is re-elected, I think he will use the power of the pen to do even more damage to the country. If he isn’t, then he will use the power of the lame duck session to do damage. Either way, we would be the losers and how do we fix it all….starting with Obamacare?

All you need to do is review the congressional records of January 10th, 1963 to see where Obama has taken this Country and how close we are from losing a Republic. A list of 45 goals was submitted into records nearly 50 years ago. I encourage any and all to review these congressional records and especially the liberal Democrats. While reading these 45 goals, pay special attention to the MSM ,education, homosexual agenda, military and civilian arms and the constitution itself to name a few and compare this document written nearly 50 years ago to modern day. Mr. HERLONG. Mr. Speaker, Mrs. Patricia Nordman of De Land, Fla., is an ardent and articulate opponent of communism, and until recently published the De Land Courier, which she dedicated to the purpose of alerting the public to the dangers of communism in America.
At Mrs. Nordman’s request, I include in the RECORD, under unanimous consent, the following “Current Communist Goals,” which she identifies as an excerpt from “The Naked Communist,” by Cleon Skousen:
CURRENT COMMUNIST GOALS
1. U.S. acceptance of coexistence as the only alternative to atomic war.
2. U.S. willingness to capitulate in preference to engaging in atomic war.
3. Develop the illusion that total disarmament [by] the United States would be a demonstration of moral strength.
4. Permit free trade between all nations regardless of Communist affiliation and regardless of whether or not items could be used for war.
5. Extension of long-term loans to Russia and Soviet satellites.
6. Provide American aid to all nations regardless of Communist domination.
7. Grant recognition of Red China. Admission of Red China to the U.N.
8. Set up East and West Germany as separate states in spite of Khrushchev’s promise in 1955 to settle the German question by free elections under supervision of the U.N.
9. Prolong the conferences to ban atomic tests because the United States has agreed to suspend tests as long as negotiations are in progress.
10. Allow all Soviet satellites individual representation in the U.N.

12. Resist any attempt to outlaw the Communist Party.
13. Do away with all loyalty oaths.
14. Continue giving Russia access to the U.S. Patent Office.
15. Capture one or both of the political parties in the United States.
16. Use technical decisions of the courts to weaken basic American institutions by claiming their activities violate civil rights.
17. Get control of the schools. Use them as transmission belts for socialism and current Communist propaganda. Soften the curriculum. Get control of teachers’ associations. Put the party line in textbooks.
18. Gain control of all student newspapers.
19. Use student riots to foment public protests against programs or organizations which are under Communist attack.
20. Infiltrate the press. Get control of book-review assignments, editorial writing, policymaking positions.
21. Gain control of key positions in radio, TV, and motion pictures.
22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic expression. An American Communist cell was told to “eliminate all good sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and meaningless forms.”
23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. “Our plan is to promote ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art.”
24. Eliminate all laws governing obscenity by calling them “censorship” and a violation of free speech and free press.
25. Break down cultural standards of morality by promoting pornography and obscenity in books, magazines, motion pictures, radio, and TV.
26. Present homosexuality, degeneracy and promiscuity as “normal, natural, healthy.”
27. Infiltrate the churches and replace revealed religion with “social” religion. Discredit the Bible and emphasize the need for intellectual maturity which does not need a “religious crutch.”
28. Eliminate prayer or any phase of religious expression in the schools on the ground that it violates the principle of “separation of church and state.”
29. Discredit the American Constitution by calling it inadequate, old-fashioned, out of step with modern needs, a hindrance to cooperation between nations on a worldwide basis.
30. Discredit the American Founding Fathers. Present them as selfish aristocrats who had no concern for the “common man.”
31. Belittle all forms of American culture and discourage the teaching of American history on the ground that it was only a minor part of the “big picture.” Give more emphasis to Russian history since the Communists took over.
32. Support any socialist movement to give centralized control over any part of the culture–education, social agencies, welfare programs, mental health clinics, etc.
33. Eliminate all laws or procedures which interfere with the operation of the Communist apparatus.
34. Eliminate the House Committee on Un-American Activities.
35. Discredit and eventually dismantle the FBI.
36. Infiltrate and gain control of more unions.
37. Infiltrate and gain control of big business.
38. Transfer some of the powers of arrest from the police to social agencies. Treat all behavioral problems as psychiatric disorders which no one but psychiatrists can understand [or treat].
39. Dominate the psychiatric profession and use mental health laws as a means of gaining coercive control over those who oppose Communist goals.
40. Discredit the family as an institution. Encourage promiscuity and easy divorce.
41. Emphasize the need to raise children away from the negative influence of parents. Attribute prejudices, mental blocks and retarding of children to suppressive influence of parents.
42. Create the impression that violence and insurrection are legitimate aspects of the American tradition; that students and special-interest groups should rise up and use ["]united force["] to solve economic, political or social problems.
43. Overthrow all colonial governments before native populations are ready for self-government.
44. Internationalize the Panama Canal.
45. Repeal the Connally reservation so the United States cannot prevent the World Court from seizing jurisdiction [over domestic problems. Give the World Court jurisdiction] over nations and individuals alike.

As a young liberal in the 60′s I used to laugh and scorn these predictions but now may have already come true and more are on the way. Thanks for printing this portion of the Congressional Record. Sounds like BHO’s agenda.

We’re DAMN SURE not a muslim nation like OWEbama told the muslim world. America was founded on Christian principles–don’t believe donblassvivar–go to the U.S. Supreme Court–above the Justices’ heads are the TEN COMMANDMENTS and on the bronze door of Supreme Court itself! On the eastern TOP of Washington Monument it reads: “Laus deo” in LATIN which means “PRAISE BE TO GOD”–EVERY DAY THE SUN RISES, IT SHINES ON THAT QUOTE FIRST. On the 897 stone steps there are numerous scriptural quotes such as “The memory of the just is blessed” (Proverbs 10:7), “Holiness to the Lord” (Exodus 28). Washington was not only the Father of the country, he established the national day of Thanksgiving calling for public thanksgiving and prayer: “In such a state of things it is an especial manner our duty as people, with devout reverence and affectionate gratitude, to acknowledge our many and great obligations to Almighty God, and implore Him to continue and confirm the blessings we experience. Inside the Lincoln Memorial are words of his Gettysburg Address saying: “We here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain, this this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom. Also on the memorial is Lincoln’s Second Inaugural address which mentions GOD 14 times and quotes the Bible twice. The Jefferson Memorial quotes Thomas Jefferson around the inside of the interior dome: “I have sworn upon the alter of God, eternal hostility against every form of tyranny over the minds of men.”
jefferson was a diest. which means he believed in a supreme being earlier in his life, near the end of his life, he questioned whether god ever existed. by believing in god, he did not automatically believe in jesus as the savior. consider that the next time u talk about christian country and values.
As Rome burned and Nero fiddled there must have been Romans standing around saying things like, “Rome is great…Rome will go on after Nero…” Get my point? We’ve had about 100 years now of people and evil forces trying to figure out how to crash “the system”, how to circumvent it and make it null and void. Legislative corruption, faulty interpretations of the Constitution by lawyers in black robes, illegal and oppressive regulation by Constitutionally questionable bureaucracies are just three of the attacks made on our country, its Constitution and our liberties. The Constitution is just a piece of parchment. If no one deliberately makes it mean what it says, what good is it? Congressmen and senators may be “temporary” but if nothing is done their forcing of Obamacare down our throats will be permanent. Abuse of executive orders, executive privilege, recess appointments, deciding which laws to enforce and which to ignore, the establishment of a shadow cabinet of czars, and criminal but “legal” enforcement of regulation against business and citizens is more of a hallmark of a dictator rather than a president. The Constitution was supposedly set up to avoid this. A press corps unworthy of the first amendment and a Republican Party full of geldings has set up a perfect storm situation to abet this president in his dictatorial pursuits. And then there’s the fear of being perceived as a “racist” if you stand up against this tyrant. A couple of more Supreme Court justices like Sotomayor and Kagan and the Constitution has been interpreted out of existence. And then there is $16 trillion soon to be $22 trillion after 4 more years of Obama of crushing enslavement to this debt. Don’t be so arrogant as to presume that “It can’t happen here.”
I disagree that EVERY election claims to be the most important or that the Republic will end if a certain candidate is NOT elected . . . at least not in my lifetime and I’m over 60. This IS indeed the MOST important election of MY lifetime. America may “go on” as you say if BHO is elected to a second term but not without possibly irreversible damage and loss at too many levels to list here.

I have voted in fifteen — count ‘em — fifteen presidential elections. This is the first one where I felt my liberties, the liberties of my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren were at stake! If the usurper declares martial law and proclaims himself president for life, that’s the end of the republic. My only hope in that case is that militias would bring us out of it! Oversimplification, perhaps…but that’s what I fear most.

those executve orders u quote were in place before obama., they are sunset orders that he renewed. we have more freedoms now than under other admins, gay people are free to marry and serve in military. all religions are respected. there are no attempts to force us to take loyalty oaths [as if that would change things]. the affordable care act will make medical care avl to MORE people and lower health care costs. abortion is protected. these are important things. u can still read your bible or your koran or your hindu book or your book of mormons without the thought police telling u which religion is more important than another. those are the freedoms of america.
america as we knew it has not even survived the first four years of obama , there has been irreversible damage done to the system of checks and balances . we teeter on the very edge of the abyss , it wont take much to push us over the edge , and there will be no coming back from that fall ! our only real hope is in our military and police , will they blindly obey illegal orders ? or will they stand with the citizens and say no ? we could be looking at the end of america !
I would agree with the author if I had never read any history. Ask any Filipino what happened in that country (a democratic republic that the USA set up, patterned after our own) when Pres. Marcos declared martial law and remained dictator for over 25 years without elections. In the mid 80′s he was overthrown and they are now having elections again but the effects of that era are deep and democracy is failing. The economy has never recovered. It can happen here.
I agree with your statements, in theory, but fear that with his 943 executive orders in less than four years, he has stiffled our Constitution so much that, if reelected, he could have us as serfs to the U.N. in rapid order His late-Friday signings have slid in under the radar of most citizens. He has given himself a way to take over nearly every aspect of our lives in “an emergency”, a situation that only he will define and Congress seems to be oblivious, or at least refuses to put the brakes on him.

So many people still don’t know what’s going on. The Republic is already gone. It’s been gone for some time now. It didn’t survive. What we have now is a two-party criminal organization that’s taking over as much as possible as fast as possible without constraint. While checks and balances is a great idea, in theory, the branches are filled with people from this same organization, they acquired their positions through that organization and are loyal to it. The battles between the parties are for political credits (for the same dishonestly marketed policies) and control of the economic concessions that come from those policies. Power corrupts, and concentration of power in two criminally controlled political parties has corrupted everything absolutely. We’re not on a precipice. We’ve slid down the slippery slop and hit bottom. “All power comes from the people,” it’s been said. Now you know that once given, it’s extremely difficult to get it back.
