An honors student in Fort Worth, Texas, was sent to the principal’s office and punished for telling a classmate that he believes homosexuality is wrong.
Holly Pope said she was “absolutely stunned” when she received a telephone call from an assistant principal at Western Hills High School informing her that her son, Dakota Ary, had been sent to in-school suspension.
“Dakota is a very well-grounded 14-year-old,” she told Fox News Radio noting that her son is an honors student, plays on the football team and is active in his church youth group. “He’s been in church his whole life and he’s been taught to stand up for what he believes.”
And that’s what got him in trouble.
Dakota was in a German class at the high school when the conversation shifted to religion and homosexuality in Germany. At some point during the conversation, he turned to a friend and said that he was a Christian and “being a homosexual is wrong.”

According to the article the principle told the boy to watch what he said in the classroom and if he had to say something take it to the hallway ???? Sounds like the principle is still advocating the suspention of the boys civil right to free speech. I think the principle and teachers need to go back to school themselves and take American history/constitutional classed or just take the district to court for violating the young mans civil rights and the teacher for his indoctrination techniques into the rainbow coalition.
A student has no Constitutional right to speak in class about anything, unless asked to do so. Having said that, since the utterance in question doesn't seem to have been the sort of thing that was disrupting the class, the teacher in this cased is an idiot.

The young man has ever right to his opinion and every right to express his opinion. If the perverts don't like it, they need to be educated to the fact that they are still a minority and they have no right to demand that other people accept their agenda. Even our politicians should be sent back to school to learn the Bill of Rights and what individual freedoms mean in this country.
Bottom Line is Public schools are Federally funded and our States are not doing what they are suppose to do along with Big Government. That is uphold defend and protect our Constitution.

It used to be that homosexual people kept their lives private, they did not shove their sexuality in our faces. While I agree that freedom of speech is important, you have to keep in mind that it is a school where those rights and beliefs are limited. I mean, I could use the same logic of "freedom of speech" to excuse students verbally abusing others, do you see how it is wrong?
No, I can't "see" the causal relationship. Verbal abuse is bullying, and that's covered by student policy codes. Stating your opinion in a non-violent setting is a discussion, one that in this case was initiated by the teacher. If you don't like the opinion you don't have the right to suspend the student. You allow others who disagree to state their case. If there are no dissenting views you move along to a different discussion. This was handled poorly from the teacher to the administration to (presumably), the school board. How would you like your child expressing himself with no malice intended and getting suspended for opining on his beliefs? Beliefs that were taught from the child's home and agree with his Christian upbringing.
You don't punish people for what might happen. The scenario you describe didn't happen, therefore the point is moot.
FYI, there is no limitation to free speech or freedom of religion beyond the common sensical "no yelling fire in a crowded movie theatre", etc.. Children aren't immune from their rights. It's not something you grow into. You may be guided by others, but your rights are fully vested regardless of age.

That's false, unless you're defining your "etc." broadly. Thought you're correct that rights aren't age specific, there are legal limits to advertising and obscenity, as well as "time and space" limitations to speech. Do I have a right to talk on my cell phone in a movie theater or show up at the next GOP candidate speech and yell throughout to keep others from hearing? Does a student have a right to talk over the teacher to keep every other student in the class from learning?

I was being common sensical, which this school is clearly not being. The teacher started the discussion. He/she should expect feedback, especially when it's not derogatory or filled with profanity. As to whether you have a right to show up at a GOP rally and scream your lungs out is up to the jurisdiction you're in and what limitations they place on yelling at a rally. If you attended an Obama rally in 2008 you'd be expected to scream as loudly as possible. I attended one in FL and that's all everyone did.
In the context of a class discussion, that student had every right to express himself. The teacher is a moderator in that situation, not a censor.

If the school system backed the teacher up, they are indeed a "confederacy of dunces." What if a Muslim kid said what this kid said? An opinion is not a weapon; it is an individual's thoughts and words, protected by the 1sr Amendment. This is a terrible example of thought police, and ignorance of the difference between freedom OF religion and freedom FROM religion. I am an old man but in all of my years have I never defended my normalcy against perversion, I have never defended my position as a Christian, as a conservative, as a patriot. I have never conceded my right to free speech, or compromised my convictions in any way. It is the liberal, the perverts (gays), atheists and those who are obviously not comfortable in their own skin who are continually on the defense.
