AUSTIN, Texas (Official Wire) — Texas Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst called Friday for state-funded, specialized firearms training for teachers and administrators to guard against school shootings.
Dewhurst, a Republican, said school districts would nominate who they wanted to carry weapons on campus. The training would be more extensive than what is currently required for a Texas concealed handgun license and include how to react in an active shooter situation.
“God forbid we should have an active shooter crisis in our schools,” Dewhurst said.
His proposal came in the aftermath of last month’s mass shooting at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., where a gunman slaughtered 20 children and six adults before killing himself. Vice President Joe Biden has been meeting with groups this week to develop policy recommendations on how to prevent such tragedies.
The National Rifle Association has called for armed guards in every school in America and rejected any further restrictions on gun purchases or ownership.

I would think that this would have to be voluntary on the part of each individual teacher/school employee or mandatory for all. The training could be mandatory but being armed at school would have to be voluntary. And I like the idea especially that it’s funded on the state level.
I think this is a wonderful Idea wether they carry firearms or not teachers should be educated on the working functions and safety of firearms, One of the best things my father taught me was how to use firearms safely and the dangers of them, fully knowledgeable about the functions & and safe use of many types of firearms. However I don’t have any firearms today but if a situation arose I wouldn’t be intimidated with handling one.
Im all for it. But all the schools where I live from grade school on through highschool, have a sheriff there at all times. All the banks and credit unions here also have a policemen there at all times and have for years… well since the blacks have started going to the same schools.
