Tennessee Republican Endorses Democrat Senate Candidate

Stacy Campfield Tennessee Republican Endorses Democrat Senate Candidate

By most accounts, Democratic Senate nominee Mark Clayton has a long uphill race in his bid to unseat Republican incumbent Bob Corker in November. Even his own party has disavowed him.

But he has at least one friend among Tennessee Republicans: State Sen. Stacey Campfield.

On Monday, the lawmaker from Knoxville stood beside Clayton and spoke on behalf of the candidate.

“He’s not endorsing me. I’m not endorsing him,” Campfield told reporters at a rainy news conference at the Nashville Public Square. “If it’s wrong to say we need more pro-life, pro-family, pro-traditional family Democrats — if that’s wrong, I don’t want to be right.”

The state senator, known for sponsoring legislation to limit discussion of homosexuality in schools and to require drug testing of welfare recipients, among other positions, agreed with so many of Clayton’s views that he even tried to convert him.
