Wow! Typical responses from the war loving Christians of the Right Wing. Turner was not saying that suicide per se is a good thing. If you have the intelligence to do so, rewind the tape and try listening to him about 10 more times. He is saying that we, as the people of the United States, have not lost our humanity. It is our humanness that revolts against war and killing another human being. I know that you Right Wing war lovers don’t get this, but God did not create us to kill others. War is a symptom of the Fall and man’s brokenness. Early Christians refused to serve in the military, preferring martyrdom to killing others, because they understood that war is incompatible with following He Who is the Prince of Peace.
American Evangelicals, on the other hand, like their Protestant forefathers who murdered Catholics by the thousands, have never seen a war they didn’t like. Strange behavior for those who claim to follow the Prince of Peace.
We are good people because, unlike the demon possessed maniacs of the Muslim religion, we are not death lovers. And the fact that young men come back and are deeply troubled over what they have done shows that we are better than that. That is the point you missed.

As a usmc veteran I’m sick beyond belief of what Ted Turner said and no amount of spin from the likes of irish eddy or anyone else can take back those terrible words towards our fallen Veterans who fell on hard enough times to make them resort to suicide.
Ted Turner will join his beloved ‘Hanoi Jane’s’ place in infamy.
Sir: I thank you for your service to our country. As I said in another post, we need the military and we need a strong national defense. What we do not need is stupid and greedy politicians starting bogus wars so that our brave young men have to die or go insane from the torment of war in order that some CEO can buy another Rolls Royce.
Sir, I want you to give your life if there is a real threat to our country. Your life is valuable to me just as my life and my Army son’s life is valuable to me. Bullcrap politics should have no place in our national defense. I am sure that you know that there are men who have come back from Iraq and roundly criticized the war, the way it was run, and the conditions under which they had to fight. Politics does not belong in war.
And as I said earlier, I think Turner was not saying that our brave men committing suicide is a good thing. He was saying that we as a people still have humanity because war so badly affects these kids, unlike the savages in the Middle East who blow themselves or anyone else up and could care less about it.

I wasn’t quite old enough but still did 4 quality years post Vietnam. It makes my heart bleed when I hear about anyone resorting to suicide, but when someone like ‘Ted Turner’ says such epic evil things in favor of our Veterans doing this- well
then that’s it- we all need to speak up against this. And then to hear the many posts pandering and rationalizing and spinning in support of ‘Ted’s’ evil words we back them against a wall.

No. I didn’t serve. I went to a military school and the guys coming back from Vietnam were telling me that it was a worthless war. When I was drafted, I skipped out. I was a hippie back then and didn’t see the value of serving.
After I was converted and returned to the Christian faith, I tried to join the Army Reserves, but was told that I was too old. I have mixed feelings about serving now. Every country needs a strong defense because there are bad guys out there. However, much of our war making in the last several years has been against imaginary enemies, such as what we are being told about Iran right now. Iran poses no threat to us if they develop nuclear weaponry. Other Islamic nations have them and they are not a threat to us, despite having large numbers of Al Queda in those countries.
Too much of war has been for the profiteering of those who make war goods and our government has been complicit with it. At the same time, as I said, we do need a strong military. My son is in the Army Reserves and I am very proud of him. I just don’t want him dying so that some CEO from Haliburton can buy another Rolls Royce. Got it?
I was once told that once a hippy, always a hippy! Most misfits in the dem party are former hippies. (Pelosi, Reid, Hillary and Bill). Wonder why I never counted myself as a “liberal in funny clothes”. Quite a few of my friends thought of me as wearing funny clothes while in my Navy uniform, later as I wore coats and ties and even now as they see me in my t-shirt and blue jeans. I’ve never thought of myself as a liberal even though my thoughts and ideas do sometimes lean in that direction.
Now let me see, Christians have been accused of killing Catholics, even though Catholics call themselves Christians, Jews and Muslims. Jews have been accused of killing Muslims and Christians, most wrongfully our Lord, Jesus. Muslims are accused of killing Christians and Jews. Face it, the human race just likes to kill each other and blame it on religion.

War will NEVER be the answer to anything as Romney so astutely said…”We can’t kill our way out of this…” Brilliant statement. Calling suicide “good” is as low a statement as a person can make.
