An art teacher in Paducah, Ky. received significant criticism after leading her students in a project during which they put an American flag on the floor and walked on it.
Facing outrage from the public and an investigation by the school district, Shand Stamper rushed to apologize before tacitly placing the blame on the kids in her class. In a letter to her superiors, Stamper said her students developed the idea, though she apparently saw no reason at the time to exercise her authority to prevent the desecration of a flag.
Principal Michael Ceglinski said that a school administrator who noticed the exercise “immediately took the flag up off the floor with another student, and folded it in its proper manner.”
Thankfully, at least some public school employees show the nation’s flag its proper respect. However, in this instance, the damage had been done; and students learned that such inappropriate behavior is acceptable.
We already have a president and leftist ruling class that continually focus on and exaggerate America’s flaws without acknowledging this nation’s unparalleled capacity for good both domestically and abroad. The intrinsic attack on patriotism by many in the public school system exacerbates an already deteriorating culture.
Whether it was her intention or not, Stamper’s class literally trampled on the most recognizable symbol of our free nation. While her apology was timely and apparently sincere, a responsible teacher would have had the foresight to prevent this lesson from ever being taught.
Unfortunately, too many educators are either too unprepared or too ideologically driven to provide our youth an adequate curriculum. It can sometimes be difficult to discern into which camp a particular teacher should fall; but, the negative and lasting results are the same.
It is the duty of parents to hold their school districts accountable in preventing all-too-common teacher malfeasance.
