Back in 2006, I bought KELY in Ely, Nevada. It’s a 250watt AM radio station on 1230Khz which been there since July 1, 1950. It was an original Conelrad Civil Defense station and still has the fallout shelter and generator in case the Commies were to bomb Ely. A piece of Americana.
It’s also the only talk radio station for miles.
In 2006, things were going well. Two companies (Dynegy and NVEnergy) had announced plans to build two coal fired power plants with all of the accompanying construction and operating employment.
Ely had doubled its population in a fairly short period of time.
Then, Harry Reid became the minority leader. All of a sudden, the representative of Nevada became a national player. And he underwent a religious conversion—to Pelosi-ism.
His far left masters decided that coal – despite the fact that we are the Saudi Arabia of coal – is bad and so are coal fired plants, no matter how clean they are. No discussion, do argument no explanation. Just no more coal fired power plants. (Keep in mind this is the same clown who just said that forest fires are the product of global warming.)
So he singlehandedly killed the plants and the jobs that came with them.
Imagine that. “I’m Harry Freakin Reid, I don’t like coal. Your town is dead.”
Now the radio station continued to do reasonably well for a while. It was part of a larger company I put together and I sold out to my partner.
Last December, I got a call from my former partner to tell me that he needed me to step back in because he simply couldn’t make the station break even.
The truth is that Harry’s actions eventually eroded the base of businesses in Ely until while they need to advertise to survive, they can no longer afford it.
I have an idea.
We don’t need a Federal “shovel ready” jobs program. In fact, Harry can shovel this!
If you will lend a helping hand here, we’ll use the money you donate to keep Rush and Sean on the air in Ely and we’ll pay it forward by giving advertising schedules to businesses who need it and can’t afford it.
Every donation is welcome. There’s no minimum or maximum size. And several times each day, we’ll run an announcement that says “Many of the commercials you hear for local advertisers were paid for with a grant from our conservative neighbors all over America who have chosen to help this community by helping local businesses survive.”
Kind of like public radio for real people.
Is this a long term solution? No. But it will buy some time as Ely’s economy recovers in spite of—not because of—Harry Reid. It will also help that economy by encouraging Ely businesses and entrepreneurs by providing—at the expense of our neighbors—something which you cannot run a business without—advertising.
Frankly, I don’t know how much we’ll raise. The gigantic company which syndicates Rush and Sean told us we couldn’t do this. It turns out that was the week when they were in negotiations to renew their contracts on some of the nation’s biggest stations and things weren’t going too well for them. They probably didn’t want to have to deal with the fallout from one of the nation’s smallest stations.
But they’re not the problem. What we’re doing is an attempt to get to the root of Ely’s problem and do something about it with the assets we already have and some help from conservative Americans everywhere.
Help us send a message to Harry. Click on the donate button and send us what you can.
Believe me, we’ll appreciate whatever you can do.
