The boomlet for Donald Trump as a Republican nominee for President of the United States ought to be a wake-up call for Republican candidates and Republican Party leaders alike.
Why has Trump surged ahead of other Republican candidates and potential candidates in the polls? It is not likely that his resurrection of the issue of Barack Obama’s birth certificate has aroused all this support.
The birth certificate issue does more political damage to Obama’s critics than to the president himself, because it enables the media to paint those critics as kooks. Nor are Donald Trump’s political positions such as to create a stampede to his cause.
Radio talk show host Mark Levin has rebroadcast Trump’s varied and mutually contradictory statements on political issues and personalities over the years. It was a devastating revelation of Trump’s “versatility of convictions,” to use a phrase coined long ago by Thorstein Veblen.
What then is Donald Trump’s appeal– and why should it concern Republican leaders in general?

I see the establishment is speaking again. They don't get it do they?? Donald Trump is thee only "Republican Nationalist" runnning. The rest are puppets on a string. Donald Trump can handle obama. The left [commies] and the RINOS involved in the grand conspiracy are shaking in their boots. Time for the hill to come tumbling down. Come what may. Politics as usual, are over. The American people will settle for no less. Justice must come, the Country needs to get up and running again.
James,as far as the media goes-there is no credible media-[none] they honestly don't think Americans can think for themselves.
Perhaps–but Sowell is about as conservative as they come.
James that is the dumbest comment you could have made! Sowell is nothing more than one of Karl Rove's Elite Washington Establishment Republican Rhino's! Get a brain you fool!
Trump is a semi-unknown quantity. He is a catalyst that is dragging the truth out where we can take a look at it. At present I don' know if what will suit Trump will suit me but I do know that what suits Obama does not suit me. The Lord is going to choose our leader as he always has and a lot of our bad leaders are due to our bad following. The Bible explains this if you are spiritual but not if you are carnal.
None of the potential candidates have everything I want but trump and Bolton have the right attitude which does not make them a good or bad potential candidate but tells me we need to carefully vet the candidates we choose to vote into office. They all have assets and they all have liabilities. We need someone who can follow princiles as well as stand his ground against opposition and leaqd. At this time I do not see who that candidate is but I do have some preferences. The best candidate by yet be below the radar.
Who cares if the liberal media calls the critics kooks. I don't. I'm not stupid, I can decide for myself
and I by myself like what Trump is saying. He's the only one who isn't political and he is aiming to
get America back on the right course and get our due respect back. And if Trump has an ulterior
motive, so be it, don't they all?
Sowell is part of "the liberal media"?! Gee, whom would you call a conservative?
"And if Trump has an ulterior motive, so be it, don't they all?"
Well, I guess that cinches it–everyone should vote for Trump. Except that he probably won't run, and is just jerking your chain.
James Sowell the Rhino is not a conservative! Trump in fact should run for he most assuredly would defeat your Fake, Gay/Bi Messiah Obama in 2012.
You clearly aren't a regular reader of Sowell's (or of anything, I suspect). But just out of curiosity. Cougar–and to counter my assumption that you can't name even one–whom would you consider to be conservative writer?
James, you may be right about Trump not running. My feelings is that he is preparing the way for the one we need to run and I am not sure his name is in the pot yet.
So far. Trump is making the right noises and just might be an excellent choice for our current conditions. Someone needs to take a stand and when they do that can change a lot of things about their past. I also see that anyone capable of being president is also capable of being a dictator and that is one of the reasons we need to pay close attention to what he will stand for and what he will not stand for. Is he running on principle or personality? If he is not runnhing on principles then he can't be completely stable. The path forks on us just ahead and we must chose one leg or the other which depends on the voter and not the candidate. I heard that the bridge is out on your path just around the bend. I don't believe the Liberal has the power given to Moses to part the waters of the Red Sea. You may see this before it is too late.
Donald Trump is standing up and saying what the majority of people want to hear. Take our country back. The "elite Republican leaders" haven't been leaders for many years and when that is pointed out by someone who actually sounds like a leader it scares the s__t out of them so they use the dim's method of attacking what they are afraid of. If any of the so-called Republican leaders had the guts to do what needs to be done, they wouldn't have to whine about how Trump can't win. Maybe they'll be surprised.
"what the majority of people want to hear"
Sure. That's why he's favored by a small percentage of Republican voters. The surprise would if Trump actually ran.
"one iron clad guarantee i can give you is that Obama will not serve another term in the White house"
And when that proves false, you'll pretend you never said it, as with your previous faulty predictions and lies. Sorry, your "guarantee" is meaningless.
McPherson's propaganda in defense of the usurper is getting as old as the off-teleprompter blatherings of the annointed one himself.
Donald Trump probably realizes that he will never be president and indeed he surely doesn't desire the job. Would any sane man want that stressful, health destroying gig especially a person worth billions who enjoys all the pleasures and perks that money can deliver?
Trump is a great patriot who is fearful of a bungling gaggle of election frauds who are now on the verge of bringing down the greatest country of all time and the entire World in the bargain. Trump's businesses are dependent on the rebounding of our economy and the revival of traditional Darwinian capitalism.
Trump is stirring the political pot and is the enforcer sent in to assure that the fringe movement be sent packing and the American manufacturing engine be restarted with a vengance.
Pack your bags, Mackie! There might be a place for you and your pals in China once the smoke settles and America is reclaimed.
