The Obama administration proposed regulations Friday that would prohibit U.S. schools from selling unhealthy snacks.
The 160-page regulation from the Department of Agriculture (USDA) would enact nutrition standards for “competitive” foods not included in the official school meal.
In practice, the proposed rules would replace traditional potato chips with baked versions and candy with granola. Regular soda is out, though high-schoolers may have access to diet versions.
“Although nutrition standards for foods sold at school alone may not be a determining factor in children’s overall diets, they are critical to providing children with healthy food options throughout the entire school day,” the proposed rule states.
“Thus, these standards will help to ensure that the school nutrition environment does all that it can to promote healthy choice, and help to prevent diet-related health problems.”

Since when is it the the government’s business what I eat or smoke for that matter? Can’t ya’ll see how asinine this becomes as they add more and more things to their list of controlled substances in what you may or may not have? Kick ALL the Federal Government out of everything and be through with them! Simply withdraw from the DC government and nullify their mandates. Better yet secede from them for all our safety.

Diet versions of sodas??? Are they bleeding nuts? There’s poison for a sugar substiute in diet sodas, and they literally DUMB ONE DOWN, and are poison for every organ!!!!!! Whre have all the adults with common sense gone?
I agree, sugar substitutes are poisonous. Our government is overstepping itself and regulating us too, too much. Our poor, poor children. They’re gonna inherit this insanity imposed on us by the tyrants in our government.
Sure, but make sure to NOT say anything about the cancer-causing GMO food because Monsanto runs the USDA and the FDA.
This was tryed before, maybe it was last year, and the kids quit eating the stuff the gov. pushed the schools to serve and they were throwing away thousands of dollars in unwanted food and the kids stayed hungry in class……..the socialist ways will not work with the kids for a long time to come….but the adults from the hippy age? They are the problem as they were in the sixities and seventies……
OK – One more time for the rest of the class…
“It is not WHAT YOU EAT that makes you fat. It is what you do AFTER YOU EAT that makes you fat.”
When I was a kid, I ate more than most adults – by about twice. But, i was always working it off, running it off, or somehow-or-other burning the calories. I was technically “overweight” according to the BMI scales (which are a joke,) but I have never been over 10% body fat until a few years ago, after breaking my neck, shattering my face, my thyroid shutting down, trouble with knees, trouble with back, pelvic fracture – I’ll quit now.
And sure – let’s put diet colas in school. Most of them are sweetened with aspartame – the first-stage metabollite of which is formaldehyde. I usually know within about 30 seconds if someone has given me aspartame – the feeling I get is akin to a railroad spike being driven into my forehead above my right eye.
And you expect me to believe that this is GOOD for the kids?
In China they have “Diet Water”.
It’s not whether something is bad or good for you, it’s the fact of having a choice as to whether you poison yourself or the government does it. Personally I’d rather be responsible for poisoning myself rather than the government. And no, there is no such thing as the perfect study that fully determines anything is safe or a hazard. Even water can be considered a poison under certain tests. At best the government can only generally tell the safety of any product, and that is all they should do. That does not mean regulate it either. However if a company is actually putting a known poison in a product that easily shows up in victims, with the product not meeting basic requirements for cleanliness and safety, then the government should take action against the manufactures, as should all those affected.

In my county school system they feed the kids dill pickles at lunch once a week. That is enough salt at one setting for over a weeks recommended diet. I also agree with the writers above that sugar in reasonable quantities is highly preferable to most of the so-called substitutes. My diabetes doctor agrees! Our children always carried a nutritional meal for lunch and ate healthy at home. A responsible government would encourage that!
If Obama is so naive as to think that’s the ONLY time those kids eat what he calls fattening foods.. what in the world does he think they eat at HOME… he’s a total idiot to think he can control a kids eating… that HAS TO COME from the HOME/Mother.. not the school….
What difference does it make if they take candy and drinks out of the schools… kids will bring candy with them when they come to school… some schools.. like the ones here have a store right near by and on their breaks.. they make a bee-line to it too.. You are not gonna stop them from eating candy and drinking cokes..
