The ratings are in the for just-completed 2009-2010 network evening news season. And when compared to 2008-2009 season, “NBC Nightly News” ABC’s “World News” and the “CBS Evening News” have lost a combined 739,000 Total Viewers and a combined 338,000 A25-54 viewers.

“Nightly News with Brian Williams,” which finishes at #1 for the 14th season in a row, lost the least: -138K Total Viewers (8.698M in 08-09 v. 8.560M in 09-10), while Katie Couric’s CBS program, lost the most: -343K (6.053M in 08-09 v 5.710M in 09-10). “World News” which saw Charles Gibson anchor the first few months of the season, and Diane Sawyer picking up in December, lost the most younger viewers: -221K (2.351M in 08-09 v. 2.130 in 09-10).

Two things:
First, it's good that fewer people are relying on nightly network news programs for anything. Now if they'd just give up cable TV and actually read some news magazines from the right, left and middle we'd all be better off.
Second, the numbers are somewhat misleading, because, as noted, the previous season "included coverage of the 2008 presidential election and inauguration." Presidential election years generate more interest in news.
thanks for your comment James.
What news magazines would you recommend? I certainly do not trust one word from Time, Newsweek , nor do I trust the Washington Post, New York Times or the Huffington Post. They all seem to have lost the ability to report the truth, and appear to take their cues from the White House press buffoon, and all the news he sees fit to print.
I wouldn't trust any of them entirely–that's why I recommend reading a range. I sometimes read the ones above (esp. the NYT) and the Christian Science Monitor, but I also read The Nation and Mother Jones from farther left and National Review and the American Conservative from the right. The Weekly Standard is more popular than either, but in my view not as thoughtful (though maybe it's just because I personally dislike William Kristol).
And just to show I mean what I say about reading things from both sides, here's a piece with links to 10 top conservative websites and 10 top conservative mags: http://usconservatives.about.com/b/2009/03/06/top…
You're staring at the best source of news and info and worried about tv and worthless magazines? If you were really good environmentalists you'd save the trees. First all media is controlled by members of bilderberg group, you think they allow truth? The tv media is controlled by bilderberg members also, can you identify truth?
Good recomendations James.
Thanks.
they play with the leftist – they get burned.
Its about time, the truth be known.
And I'll betcha cable FOX news came in FIRST>
I'll take that bet. In fact, Fox did win among Cable channels, but got smoked by all of the programs mentioned above.
Fox News gets somewhere around two million viewers for an entire day, while even CBS–the lowest-ranked of the "big three"–gets almost three times that many in a half hour.
James i do not keep up with viewers polls but i believe Babs is correct about Fox News being
number one in the cable news networks. I as well would tend to agree with you as well pertaining to the major networks since the majority of television viewers still do not have cable.
Thanks, but most Americans now do have cable. But most don't pay all that much attention to news or political issues, settling for a dismal traditional half hour of network news per day.
James 60% of Americans now have cable according to the survey i looked at.
Colo43,
I most definitely agree!
ABC, CBS & NBC are losing their viewers to Fox News!
The Main Street American wants their news to be reported fairly & not with a far left liberal or far right bias. ABC, CBS & NBC will continue to lose viewers to Fox News until they adopt a fair & balanced
platform.
James i am impressed! I did not think you had the ability to post a competent comment.
I'm sure it won't last.
I'm sure!
Thank you.
