Peace Keepers is a mostly Black male violence mediation group founded by Mr. Dennis Muhammad in 2008, a member of Louis Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam.
Unarmed, they squash “beefs ” (disputes) between urban men before triggers are pulled. Here in New Orleans and elsewhere, they have hotlines people can call when tempers flare.
Media mogul Russell Simmons recently called for Peace Keepers to be deployed as opposed to armed guards or more police in America’s schools.
As a citizen on patrol, I support the Peace Keepers concept since urban men are best positioned to address the homicide exploding in our ranks.
When Russell Simmons said they should be placed in schools instead of armed guards or more police, it raises a question: will school systems fund an organization whose heroic mediation includes close ties to Louis Farrakhan, considered racist and anti-Semitic by many in the mainstream?
Active in 25 US cities and the United Kingdom, if the Farrakhan question can be successfully resolved, the Peace Keepers will mediate disputes beyond their inner-city beat.
“I Am Present For Peace!” is their motto.
More peace is what we need; and where possible, it should be privately provided instead of relying on government.

Cap, I think Mr. Simmons may be forgetting one aspect of most of the mass shooters in recent years. Most of them were deranged psychotics! The Fort Hood shooter was a Muslim extremist probably hoping to join a lot of virgins asap. The Peacekeepers are dealing with angry, possibly violent individuals but probably sane and somewhat reasonable individuals or else they couldn’t be successful. Could they have reasoned with the Arizona, Colorado or Connecticut shooters? I think not, if they were on the scenes, unarmed, and revealed themselves they would have just joined the casualty lists.
There’s a real place in this sorry world for the Peacekeepers, we need thousands (millions?) more like them but when a psycho gets a gun and decides to act it’s too late. There’s a least two ways any of the mass killers could have been stopped, by a sane person with a gun who shoots first or by any of the parents, doctors, teachers, school administrators, neighbors, classmates, friends, etc who recognized the potential in these nuts and raised an alarm.
Until we realize that anyone who comes to know that an individual is deranged and has evil intent is complicit in the crime if they take no action, these mass killings will continue. Lanza’ mother and father and brother all knew that he was a living time-bomb. The Arizona killer scared everyone he came into contact with. His family, school authorities, classmates, doctors, individuals by the dozens knew he was a psycho on the loose. Not one effective action was taken. In my mind all of these individuals are accessories to the crime.
I know, ACLU and all that, but somehow we must allow rational individuals to out the unrational ones. I don’t know how this can be accomplished without being abused but the killings will continue until we find a way.
I do not support a lot of what NOI stands for. I dislike racists of all types. But this type of community outreach sounds like a good thing. Having their mediators/peace keepers who are of the community, in the schools might help. But haven’t most of the shooting been in predominantly white, middle class and upper-middle class schools? These NOI peace keepers will be out of their element.
Regardless, I hope that they can do some good. I give them credit for at least trying.

It’s my understanding Chicago has one of the highest murder rates in the country. That is recently. If the peace keepers started in 2008 how high must the murder rate have been then? Or do you mean they have done a fantastic job of keeping the rate high?
I agree with “JustRon” 100%. It can be accomplished by setting numerous tests the “outed” person has to pass. A phychotic won’t pass any of them. We all have that inner voice that recognises Evil. Those people who knew them were afraid of them, the hairs stood up that told them this boy was not just a lost and unhappy soul, that only perhaps he was independant but sane. They knew Evil – and they said nothing. I think if Evil is outed, by one person, others will know it too and Evil can be detained. I went through my whole life never knowing an actual Evil person – knew a lot of weird ones – but never one I was afraid to be around. We need to stop these, and talking to them won’t stop them. If one person in each place had a gun, they would have been stopped. Peace Keepers have a place, and thank the Lord for them, but they deal with sane nasty people, the Evil is a whole different thing and Evil is better dealt with death before they take as many of them as they can on their way to hell.
It’s been said before and it is true,” The best defense from a bad guy with a gun, is a good guy with a gun.” Simple! But, no, we must have bleeding hearts and hand wringers and “Peacekeepers” with ties to Islam wanting in on the deal when the answer is so simple.
These peacekeepers sound good and probably can do good in some cases. But, these shootings are done by madmen. I think it might be difficult and dangerous to deal with them. I mean they could try to reason with them at first, but should be armed just in case peaceful intervention doesn’t work. And just because a good guy is there with a gun does not mean that ‘good guy’ is not peaceful. He’s just defending the innocent from some nut. Sometimes, you have to fight fire with fire; fight a “bad guy with a gun” by having a good guy with a gun confront the bad guy. I noticed that the shooters at all these shootings once the first responders arrived on the scene the shooter stopped shooting because the first responders were armed. Armed law-abiding citizens does deter crime because criminals don’t obey laws.

* How many murders in Chicago compared to 2012
* How many Peace Keepers killed

However, just my opinion, any organization that has ties with Louis Farrakhan’s Nation of Islam.or any organization related to “Islam” needs to be avoided because all the “rest of us” are infidels in their view and teachings If you’ve heard anything about the religion of Islam you SHOULD know what that means.

Russell Simmon’s can be for all the peace that he want’s, but unless the flow of drugs, and the dependency that American people have on drugs, there can never be any peace in America.
Just what we need, The Nation of Islam in our schools – isn’t it enough that school texts cheer Islam, denounce Christianity, is praised to the skys? These people are SO transparant and the American public so stupid, that it will be a very short time before they take over this country. There is the Muslim Brotherhood , CAIR, Farrakhan’s group, plus so many Islamic organizations we’ve never heard of.

There are so many Islamists in our Federal Gov’t., and country in general. These people have caused unbelievable problems in this country and now you want to invited them into our schools?
