(Reuters) – Finally, there is definitive proof: The presidential candidate was born in the United States, and his father was not.
Yes, Republican Mitt Romney appears eligible to be president, according to a copy of Romney’s birth certificate released to Reuters by his campaign. Willard Mitt Romney, the certificate says, was born in Detroit on March 12, 1947.
His mother, Lenore, was born in Utah and his father, former Michigan governor and one-time Republican presidential candidate George Romney, was born in Mexico.
So on a day when real estate and media mogul Donald Trump was trying to help Mitt Romney by stirring up a new round of questions about whether Democratic President Barack Obama was born in the United States, Romney’s own birth record became a reminder that in the 1968 presidential campaign, his father had faced his own “birther” controversy.
Back then, George Romney – who died in 1995 – was a moderate who was challenging eventual President Richard Nixon in the Republican primaries.

There’s no clarity to the answer if Mitt Romney is a natural born citizen.
The article does say that George was born in Mexico, but it does not say if George was a naturalized citizen before Mitt Romney was born in 1947.

Naturalization of the father makes no difference. As I read the issue, “two citizen parents” are parents born in the USA, not “naturalized”. The whole point of the “two citizen parents” and “natural born” issues was to ensure that a sitting President did NOT have any divided loyalties.
There is a shortage of information in this article. I do believe that his father, although born in Mexico, was born to parents who were citizens of the United States I don’t believe they were citizens of Mexico. They were US citizens residing in Mexico.
You are incorrect about what it takes to be a ‘natural born citizen’ in the US.
One’s parents do NOT have to be US citizens for their child to be a natural born US citizen.
In this case, as long as the child is born in the US, any state, then that child is a natural born US citizen. Yes, that’s all that is needed.
If a child is born within the US, then that child is a US citizen, regardless if the parents are US citizens.
George Romney was not born on US soil. He was born in Mexico. So, how is he a natural born US citizen. Answer: Because both of his parents were/are US citizens. Thus, if a child is born on foreign soil and both parents are US citizens, then that child is also a natural born US citizen.
Here’s another interesting fact.
If a child is born to an unwed US citizen mother, who had been in the US for least 1 year continuously, then that child is also a natural born US citizen.
Back to MIt Romney. His records show that he was born in Detroit MI, to his US citizen parents. However, if Mit had been born in Mexico, then he may not have been a natural born US citizen. Why? Because, to be a natural born citizen born outside the US, then at least one of his married parents would have had to be residents of the US. So, if George Romney was born in Mexico and had not had US residency, and his wife also had not been a US resident, then Mit would be a Mexican citizen not a US citizen.
That’s offered as an example, because as we know that is not what happened.
It’s interesting how much scrutiny Obama has had about his citizenship, simply because his father was not a natural born US citizen. Yet, people seem to voluntarily dismiss the fact that Barrack’s mother is a natural born US citizen.
Regardless of Obama’s father’s citizenship status, the fact that Obama was born in Hawaii automatically gives Obama natural born US citizenship.
Some people have contested whether Obama’s US citizen mother was actually married to his father. No need to even go into that. Why? Because, again, even if Obama’s parents were not married, and Barrack were born outside the US, he still has natural born status because of his mother, who is a US citizen and had resided within the US for longer than the year required.
If Obama’s parents weren’t married, and Barrack was born outside the US, again, Barrack get natural born status because of his mothers’s citizenship.
Too many people jump on too many wagon’s that have faulty premise.
If you don’t understand something, then educate yourself before spewing out political talking points. All this information is available. Yes, it takes some time to get to real information that is not being presented by one political side or the other. Look up immigration information on government websites, and university websites, real legal information websites, etc…. If all your information comes from only one and one sided talks shows, then your information will be unbalanced, skewed, and basically, wrong.

For more than two centuries, it has been understood that a natural born American citizen, as the term was used in Article II Section 1 of the Constitution, was a person who was born in American to two American citizens, whether natural born or naturalized.
If Mitt Romney’s father never became an American citizen, Mitt Romney was not a natural born American citizen.

Both of George Romney’s parents were US citizens. That would have made George Romney a US citizen. George Romney’s wife was from Utah.

I understand George’s parents were both born in the USA but George was born in a Mexico commune. That does not make George a citizen of the USA. His USA parents would have to apply for citizenship for their son. Only if he is born on a military installation does his citizenship become automatic as that is considered American soil. Thank you Ralphe – read the history. As Mormons, grandparents and parents colonized parts of Mexico from Utah. They were citizens of the USA. When the wars began, the grandparents ran back to USA soil bringing their children. They chose USA citizenship for the children, as they were born within the colonized realm of the church ,sanctioned by the laws of Mormon church, Utah and the USA. Considering the times in the early 1900′s – and the original Mormons were USA citizens – I won’t argue. Mit’s parents, from children, lived as citizens from citizen parents. There was never any doubt of their allegiance to the United States.
Mittens is a natural born US citizen, thus can be US President.
As well, Obama is a natural born US citizen, thus he can be be US President.

Given all the resources and information readily available to those who make this allegation, it smell of BS that there is NO conclusive proof that Obama was not born in the USA.
