Review Of Juan Williams’ Firing Done; NPR News Exec Resigns

NPR just released two statements — one on the completion of an independent review of last year’s dismissal of news analyst Juan Williams and another on the resignation of Senior Vice President for News Ellen Weiss:

“Washington, DC January 6, 2011 — The NPR Board of Directors announced today that it has completed its review into the facts and circumstances leading to the termination of NPR’s contract with senior news analyst Juan Williams. The review also included an examination of how other NPR analysts and correspondents have been treated under the NPR Ethics Code with respect to on-air comments. The independent members of NPR’s Board (the “Board”) worked with outside legal counsel, Weil, Gotshal & Manges LLP (“Weil”), to gather information related to the contract termination.

“In light of the review and feedback provided to them, the Board has adopted recommendations and remedial measures designed to address issues that surfaced with the review. The recommendations and remedial measures range from new internal procedures concerning personnel and on air-talent decisions to taking appropriate disciplinary action with respect to certain management employees involved in the termination. Some of these changes have already been made and others are in process.

“NPR also announced that Ellen Weiss, Senior Vice-President for News, has resigned.

” ‘We have taken this situation very seriously and the Board believes these recommendations and remedial steps address the concerns raised in connection with the termination of Williams’ contract,’ said Dave Edwards, Chair. ‘The Board regrets this incident’s impact on NPR and will work with NPR’s CEO, Vivian Schiller, to ensure that these actions will be expeditiously completed, examined, and monitored on an ongoing basis.’

  1. its time to dump all government funding for npr as they are the defacto propaganda machine for the democratic , left wingers, I for one do not support their brand of the news

  2. Williams plays both sides, Fox should fire him also !!

  3. commiehunter says:

NPR should have been defunded years ago. Just because they make a few meaningless changes in procedures doesn't mean they, NPR, will become all warm and fuzzy towards America and just what does Fox think they are gaining from "rescuing" this Viper-Williams? Whenever Fox has Beckel or Williams on I have to change channels, I can no longer stand their Hate America Marxist Hate speech over and over again. Fox WILL be sorry they hired this guy but will NEVER admit it.

  4. We need to end ANY and ALL Federal funds that g to NPR and let them sink or swim on their own since they do not seem to understand what unbiased and balanced actually mean.

  5. Why is this organization still on the public dole? The news they choose to report ,is one sided and biased. They should not receive any support from the US citizens, because of their failure to report both sides of the news. They are recent recipients of a large donation from a George Soros funded organization, which puts them in a position of reporting what their benefactor wants reported. The public should not have to pay taxes to support NPR and I hope Washington will defund them soon.

  6. UGACracker says:

Blah, blah, blah…Just de-fund them and be done with it. NPR is 1) confident in their ability to survive with the business and operating model they have put in place, and 2) stated that federal funding is minuscule, amounting to about 1% of their total budget. If both are true, as asserted by NPR, then they won't need or miss government subsidization.

  7. Good. She should of step down. Now they need to bring some balance to NPR.

  8. I have read the 9 comments prior and agree with most – all taxpayer funding of NPR should end immediately. NPR was, at one time, an unbiased news organization, but that was many years ago. When it was conceived, it was the 4th network in the nation (the others being ABC, CBS and NBC) and even at that time, there was 'media bias' although it was much, much subtler than today. In NPR's early days, it was the only place to find "alternative" points of view. Today, the organization has been completely taken over by the leftist progressives. Their "alternative" points of view now belong only in the few remaining Communist countries, not ours.

With as much TV, radio and internet news available today, the original purpose for NPR (to combat media bias) no longer exists. In fact, NPR only adds to media bias today. And since there never was a Constitutional justification for taxpayer support, there no longer remains any reason for said support today.

  9. With regard to Juan Williams, I am not a fan. However, without intellectual arguments from the left as espoused by Williams et al., the conservatives' arguments on FOX News would become dull and uninspiring and therefore, pointless. Also, it is people like Williams that allow FOX the dubious ability to claim to be 'fair and balanced.' If you don't like what Williams says, use it to sharpen your own arguments. Find the faults with the liberal's lies and drown them with the truth.

  10. Edwardkoziol says:

Now the republicans can vote them out by defunding them.Lets face it a leopard can't change its spots and a snake will always be a snake. The only reason they made that homely broad step down and didn't give the other old broad a raise is they want to stay on the air.well it's time to do it on your own, after all your backed by that jewish guy George Soros.
