Rand Paul Endorses Immigrant Path To Citizenship

Rand Paul 4 SC Rand Paul endorses immigrant path to citizenship

WASHINGTON — Republican Sen. Rand Paul said Tuesday that illegal immigrants should be allowed to become U.S. taxpayers and ultimately get a shot at citizenship, a significant step for the Tea Party favorite amid growing Republican acceptance of the idea.

“Let’s start that conversation by acknowledging we aren’t going to deport” the millions already here, the potential 2016 presidential candidate told the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. “Prudence, compassion and thrift all point us toward the same goal: bringing these workers out of the shadows and into becoming and being taxpaying members of society.”

It was the latest sign that the Republican Party is moving to broaden its appeal to politically influential Latinos and other ethnic minorities after significant election losses last fall. Paul spoke a day after a Republican National Committee report called on the GOP to support comprehensive reform, though without specifying whether it should include a pathway to citizenship, which is decried by some conservatives as amnesty.

Meanwhile, a bipartisan group of senators is nearing agreement on sweeping legislation to overhaul the nation’s immigration policy, an effort that could get a boost from Paul’s stance.

The Kentucky Republican said for him to support such an approach, a stronger border must come first, and Congress must agree that border security has improved. The path to citizenship he envisions would come with other conditions, too, that would make it long and difficult for illegal immigrants to travel.

  1. The GOP must come to accept that it will never survive politically, if it keeps pushing for “nothing except full deportation”. Now, I don’t fully like a “pathway to citizenship”, but it must be a well-defined pathway, with a beginning, an end, and it must have a set period of eligibility. There must be a 12-month period to register for eligibility. Then in the 2nd year a $100 bounty on illegal aliens. And 5-years after the the beginning of the program, then there must be full deportation, of illegals under 2-years of martial law. Comprehensive Immigration Reform must make illegal immigration a felony crime. Comprehensive Immigration Reform must end Sanctuary for Illegal Aliens.

  2. Rand Paul seems obsessed to stay in the limelight, that must be very upsetting for lame brain MCcain, she McCain likes to bask in the spotlight of the audience. Granting a path to illegals to become citizens pretty much guarantees a loss in 2016, no matter who runs against the Democrats, why, because most hispanics when they become American’s join the Democrats, and i personally see now rush in adding 7-10 million Democrats onto the voters roll.

  3. Let’s NOT start the conversation with

    WHY start there?
Is America a nation of laws?
Have illegals “STARTED” with breaking our laws, making them criminals?

Those who break our laws are criminals.
CRIMINALS DO NOT DESERVE SPECIAL WAIVERS/EXEMPTIONS.
