As supermarket chains struggle to maintain profitability amid rising costs, proposed ObamaCare regulations will only add to their troubles.
Experts estimate the pending federal mandate, which dictates how store owners must label ready-to-eat foods, will result in a $1 billion expense within the first year of its implementation.
According to Erik Lieberman of the Food Marketing Institute, stores have two expensive options in adhering to the rule: purchase software to test food nutrition, or use outside laboratories.
On top of the expense, he contends store owners will now be liable for any mistakes made in labeling.
“If you get it wrong, it’s a federal crime,” he said, “and you could face jail time and thousands of dollars worth of fines.”
Obviously, the Food and Drug Administration heralds the intrusion as a step toward a healthier America.
According to a statement from the agency, the new law “should help consumers limit excess calorie intake and understand how the foods that they purchase at these establishments fit within their daily caloric and other nutritional needs.”
With countless websites and other sources devoted to helping users determine nutritional information, this move strikes me as not only unnecessary but unfair to grocers who did not sign up to be agricultural chemists.
Of course, store owners alone are not going to absorb the immense additional cost of business.
The owner of one supermarket chain addressed the impact such legislation will have on consumers.
“When you incur a significant cost,” he said, “there’s no way that that doesn’t get passed on to the customer in some form.”
The Obama administration, apparently not satisfied with tax increases, inflation, and rampant unemployment, seek to enact this and other regulations that will not only stifle the free market but cost all Americans – especially the sacred working class – much more in the future.

Since FDA can fine and imprison grocers for inaccurate labeling as to the number of calories in a product they sell, then we need a enforced law about a fine and imprisonment for a politician that lies!!!
Two of us are spending $200 a week for food and stuff for maintaining the house. It was $75 a week in 2005. I don’t know what people will do when food doubles again. If I had a couple of children, my bill would easily be $300 a week. This is outrageous and obama is to blame. Let the free market work and do away with all the regulations that are causing food prices to skyrocket. It is communist to enslave people this way.

Why should Obama care, WE pay for HIS food, drinks, and follies…… The jerks who voted for him have to pay the same thing (unless they decide to rob a grocery store or a bank or two)….. so now it’s ‘payback’ time FROM the Republicans. But it’s the jerks who voted for him either can’t or dont read… so they will never know it was HIM who gave ‘em these high gas and grocery prices… Guess when their bucket of ‘gold’ runs dry, they’ll wake up and see it was the big earred joker sitting in the White House dining on Lobster and fine wine.

Cloward-Piven again. Funny thing about that, even if you make Libs aware of Cloward-Piven they deny its affect even though they are its result.
This is what happens when we have too many paper pushers sitting around in the federal bureaucracy looking for something to do. They will always push their pencils and write some regulation that will require the private sector to jump through hoops in response to their beck and call to make it appear they are worth their keep. It’s not only a waste of taxpayer money to pay them their outrageous salaries and benefits but a further waste of the taxpayer-consumer’s precious resources by passing on the costs of complying with the regulations to the consumer. Only when the liberal drones and welfare recipients start to feel the pinch, maybe then there will be enough backlash to stop this tyranny but until then we’ll have to hunker down and ride out the storm the best way possible. Does that imply there might be a better future coming our way? Not necessarily, just trying to put a positive spin on our situation while hoping for the best despite the bleakness.
Like we don’t know what the hell we are eating, or do we? what are they putting in our food? eww anyone remember the movie Soilent Green?

It’s been working for them for 40 years now. The interesting thing is that I have yet to meet a single Liberal who has ever heard of Richard Cloward or Frances Fox-Piven or their Strategy. Strange, eh? The Lib Masters don’t even want their own adherents to know about the Cloward-Piven Strategy.
Even worse is that once made aware of it the reaction is universal – “Oh, that’s just Right Wing Radical propaganda!”
