As more damning emails to and from former IRS official Lois Lerner surface, outrage over the agency’s loss of two years’ worth of such correspondences only grows more intense. Whether caused by a hard drive failure, as the IRS claims, or by some more sinister plot, the value of evidence lost remains incalculable.
In any case, the investigation into Lerner and the systematic targeting of conservative groups by the IRS continues; and as a congressional report indicates, the emails that do exist reveal her deep disdain for those on the political right.
A partially redacted email exchange with Lerner includes one unnamed individual opining about the perceived danger of conservative talk radio.
“Well, you should hear the whacko wing of the GOP,” the sender states. “The US is through; too many foreigners sucking the teat; time to hunker down, buy ammo, and prepare for the end. The right wing radio shows are scary to listen to.”
Lerner ups the rhetoric in her reply.
“Great,” she responded. “Maybe we are through if there are that many a—holes.”
Later in the conversation, Lerner suggested that it will be conservatives, not any outside enemy, that will bring about the downfall of our nation.
“So we don’t need to worry about alien teRrorists [sic],” she wrote. “It’s our own crazies that will take us down.”
House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dave Camp reacted to the new revelation in a letter urging Attorney General Eric Holder to “begin aggressively investigating this matter or appoint a special counsel.”
He cited the harsh language used in her email as evidence of a “deep animus towards conservatives,” which he concludes “clearly demonstrates why Ms. Lerner not only targeted conservatives, but denied such groups their rights to due process and equal protection under the law.”
