On March 31, Marine Sgt. Andrew Tahmooressi was imprisoned by the Mexican government for accidentally crossing the US-Mexico border with legal firearms in his truck. Sgt. Tahmooressi has been living under the harsh treatment of Mexican officials for 215 days and counting.
Sgt. Tahmooressi is awaiting a ruling by a Mexican judge that will determine his future. There is no set date on when the ruling will be passed down, yet Sgt. Tahmooressi is in dire need of treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
President Obama has failed to request the release of Sgt. Tahmooressi–even after speaking with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto recently. Several US Congressmen have already called for Sgt. Tahmooressi’s release, including Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-CA) who has taken a major role in demanding his release. Others working to facilitate Sgt. Tahmooressi’s release have been ignored by the Obama Adminstration.
On October 1, the subcommittee of the House Foreign Affairs Committee held a special hearing on Sgt. Tahmooressi’s imprisonment. Sgt. Tahmooressi’s mother Jill testified to her son’s bravery alongside radio talk show host Montel Williams who lambasted the Obama Administration for allowing the mistreatment of veterans to fester. Williams made a special note of Sgt. Tahmooressi and how the Obama Administration is allowing his battle with PTSD to worsen as he is tortured in a Mexican prison.
President Obama’s complete disrespect for our servicemen and women is disgraceful. No service member, especially not veterans like Sgt. Tahmooressi who proudly served two tours overseas, deserve this sort of treatment at the hand of a foreign government.
