THIS POLL IS NOW CLOSED.
On August 9th, police officer Darren Wilson was responding to a call about a robbery that occurred in Ferguson, Missouri. The suspect was 18-year-old Michael Brown. Brown encountered Wilson in a violent struggle that left Brown dead after being shot six times.
The teen’s death spurred outrage in the predominantly black community, where residents held violent protests and looted retail establishments all over the city–despite dozens of witnesses having corroborated the police officer’s side of the story.
Protests have become increasingly more violent over the past few days as police fired rubber bullets at protesters in response to flaming Molotov cocktails. Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has declared the chaos a state of emergency. But the violent activity has not calmed down. On Tuesday, police officers shot and killed another man after he threatened them with a knife. The incident occurred just 4 miles from the shooting of Michael Brown.
The President’s inaction has sparked controversy over whether he is using the riots in Ferguson for political gain. Obama could be trying to generate excitement among black voters at a time where support from the black community is in decline. Black voters are feeling increasingly ignored as the President turns his attention to another minority group, namely the 11 million amnesty-seeking illegal immigrants.
President Obama can win back the black community if he cites a disparity of injustice between black males and other groups, or if Attorney General Eric Holder makes a statement condemning the officer for shooting Michael Brown because he was black. Civil rights leaders like Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rev. Al Sharpton have both rallied support for the black community in Ferguson.
The threat of losing the Senate majority in November could be enough for President Obama to ensure a politically beneficial outcome for the Democratic Party. If President Obama doesn’t directly address the situation, we could see a resurgence in violence not just in Ferguson but throughout the entire country.
For the President to take advantage of disaster in this way could be the new low point of his presidency. All this over a box of cigars…
