It looks like cash hungry local governments are getting awfully rapacious these days:
Between her blog and infrequent contributions to ehow.com, over the last few years she says she’s made about $50. To [Marilyn] Bess, her website is a hobby. To the city of Philadelphia, it’s a potential moneymaker, and the city wants its cut.

In May, the city sent Bess a letter demanding that she pay $300, the price of a business privilege license.
“The real kick in the pants is that I don’t even have a full-time job, so for the city to tell me to pony up $300 for a business privilege license, pay wage tax, business privilege tax, net profits tax on a handful of money is outrageous,” Bess says.
It would be one thing if Bess’ website were, well, an actual business, or if the amount of money the city wanted didn’t outpace her earnings six-fold. Sure, the city has its rules; and yes, cash-strapped cities can’t very well ignore potential sources of income. But at the same time, there must be some room for discretion and common sense.

I used to work for the City of Minneapolis and let me tell, IT IS TOTALLY CORRUPT. The unions have made it so that every employee has to join the union, almost impossible to get fired, and you would not believe the benefits we the taxpayers pay for these under worked, over staffed, and over paid gov't employees get! It is no wonder every state is out of money and then liberal democrats run on a slate to raise taxes! Check your past years city bills and then look at current rates and fees! What they have done is to lower services and put fees on everything, it's ridiculous. We need to vote out of office all these liberal deomcrats before we all have nothing left to buy food for our kids!
I have said for years that not only is the federal Government corrupt but so is the City, County and State!!!!! We need to clean house in voting booths at every election. Get rid of all career politicians. We do not need the politicians to enforce term limits because we tax payers and voters can enforce that!!!!!
Carol you are totally right!
LOL! Why not tax us for the air that we breathe while they are at it? It is fast becoming better to be unemployeed & on unemployeement benefits coupled with Social Services benefits such as food stamps, medicaid ,housing assistance, day care assistance than to be employeed & have to pay all the taxes!
